Can't find a link, but it is on the NYT home page now. You can really see where Obama made strides, and the "Appalachian" band of support for McCain. Looks like Orlando really came through for Obama.

1. That REALLY makes the R's look like a national party going regional
Interesting how that's all one culture--the Appalachans, Arkansas Ridges and Ozarks.

The R's can stage their next convention at Toad Suck and no one will have far to travel.

8. Plus the fundy strongholds in the Fl panhandle and Col springs.
Maybe they should have their next convention in Branson! Or maybe Pennsacola.....

7. I noticed they almost formed a band/or belt. But it didn't stretch to the deep south.
maybe there is hope?

9. Arkansas
as an entire state moved right. Blecccch.

Oklahoma, TN and the middle of nowhere Appalachia weren't really a surprise, but I think Louisiana was a direct effect of displaced and dead Katrina victims.

Yep, the South is looking good, as is the mountain West. Gobama!

And Tennessee, also very scary.

4. We have to get rid of hate radio. This map shows its influence very clearly.
In rural, isolated areas hate radio made inroads in recent years, convincing people that Obama was lots of scary things. We need to restore the Fairness Doctrine and get balanced information to the people living in Appalachia, Louisiana, and other places that went redder than ever this year.

16. Exactly.
My state was moving more Democratic in years past (I live in Tennessee), but with the "popularity" of hate radio, it's shifting more and more into the dark side. Popularity is in quotes because it's the only game in most of these towns. There is no liberal radio to compete with it; therefore, I'm not sure if it's popular, or simply the only choice for those wanting news.

It's awful.

26. You're definitely on to something there.
Of course the best remedy to hate speech is reason. We need to make sure all Americans have access to real, impartial news and commentary. We also need to make it entertaining.

30. Exactly right. Give people access to the facts and eliminate monopolies.
Right wing media have been allowed to have monopolies in some rural markets. This leads to hate radio.

5. Holy heck--that shows that a great deal of Arizona's rural counties went Blue.
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 12:59 PM by blondeatlast
You kinda have to live here to understand, but that is monumental; it's usually the rural counties that turn us red (Pima is solid blue and Maricopa (Phoenix) is always red).

The Democrats really pushed in the rurals--it paid off. Next time...

I get that--but that is a MAJOR change here. AZ is virtually my lifetime home; I grew up in a rural
county here and this is a remarkable acheivement. No pissing on my parade can change that.

It holds great hope for 2010 and 2012.

6. What I dont understand about my state of Tennessee
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 01:13 PM by TornadoTN
The counties closest to the border of North Carolina, went strong McCain.

However, just on the other side of that border in North Carolina, the counties bordering them went almost even or broke to Obama. These are NOT high AA counties we are talking about in NC either!!! To think that an imaginary line makes that much difference is silly at first until you realize its true.

What the hell is in our water here in Tennessee that makes people so fucking stupid?

19. Makes a hell of a lot of sense
Seriously it does. I know too many people that listen to hate-wing radio and consider it "news".

I just hope we get a tech revolution in this state like North Carolina has seen. It's the only way to drive the old fundy vote out and get some new blood in. I'm ecstatic about an Obama Presidency and I thank you people in blue states that made it happen. But I can't help but feel a little dejected that my own state can't be part of that club.

31. As I said above, I think that this map actually shows us where hate radio has monopolies.
Right wing media monopolies saturated some markets with insane commentary about Obama, scaring people into thinking he was a communist terrorist etc.

11. It seems impossible
that Kansas could have been so dead set on McCain, Roberts etc. looking at this map. The areas that are red are barely populated and the cities where everyone is are all blue or more blue than the last election. I lost my Democratic Congresswoman by quite a bit and the district is definitely more blue than before. I fail to understand this. I have nothing but Republicans now to speak with. Every last one of my reps, national and state, is a Republican yet is shows my area as being more blue. Fuck.

13. It just says that your area is getting closer to blue, not the absolute value
If you go from 25 to 30% Dem, that would be blue on that map. But cheer up, things are trending better, and maybe next election some of the Repubs will get tossed out.

It is just damned hard to lose the one Dem I had and to lose her to such a nitwit. Still, the trend is good. I have other things that I work on and not being a Dem I am not much help to them so I guess I should not complain.

Especially when you contrast Indiana with Kentucky. Midwestern reasonableness versus Southerness backwardness.

14. As was pointed out time and again during the primary
Obama was a stronger candidate nationally but he was very weak in the Mid-South. Luckily the Mid-South doesn't have many electoral votes.

24. I read this in another section of the NYT..
"Perhaps one of the most poignant accolades came from Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s former president, who said in a letter to Mr. Obama: “Your victory has demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dare to dream of wanting to change the world for a better place.”

So did the "red" county vote more for Kerry in 04? Like maybe 68%?
Or maybe it is wrong. I figured the county was where Colorado Springs is, and the fundies came out for Palin...
