CNN: Reid undecided about stripping Lieberman's Committee Chairmanship- will meet this week
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 01:53 PM by npincus
Please do it, Sen Reid.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/11/05/reid-lieberman-to-meet-this-week/

(CNN) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will likely meet later this week with Joe Lieberman to discuss whether the Democrat-turned-Independent will be stripped of his Senate committee chairmanship, a senior Democratic leadership aide tells CNN.

Lieberman currently chairs the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

This aide says that Reid, who is calling the meeting, has not yet decided what to do. The aide admits that the decision will be determined in part by the final election results tonight — and just how close the party is to a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority — but insists that the biggest factor involved is lingering anger among Senate Democrats over Lieberman's Republican convention speech.

This aide also said that Senate Democrats aren't that upset about Lieberman's constant presence and cheerleading on the campaign trail with John McCain — instead, they've been put off by the things he said about Barack Obama at the Republican convention in St. Paul.

2. Don't expect anything on this, just a forewarning
When it comes to Reid, we all know how putting our hopes in him turns out. Unless he grows a spine between now and their meeting, I don't expect anything to be done to smug Joe.

If anything, he'll give him a promotion based on the past track record.

10. I'm hoping that another Senate Democrat's ambitions will seek to oust Lieberman
from his committee chairmanships. The Senate Dems that helped Obama should be rewarded at Lieberman's expense.

Lieberman will not go over to the GOP to spite Dems if he loses his chairmanships. He knows that if he wants perks to take credit for, he needs to caucus with the majority party.

I seriously doubt Lieberman will run for re-election in CT in 2012. The CT Democrats won't support him and the Republicans won't be able to fund his independent general election run.

3. Reid is a fucking wimp! He needs to go as well.
I would like to see Barbara Boxer take over Reid's position as Senate leader.

and caucus with the Republicans. My take on that is--Fine, of that's what he wants to do. It's a lot like a rat swimming out to the Titanic, though.

7. Since the Dems apparently fell a couple of votes short of a filibuster...
proof majority, I am afraid that Reid might be tempted to welcome Lieberman back into the fold. That's one reason why I am hoping that we might still win the Minnesota seat after the recount.

12. Lieberman will help the GOP filibuster despite Reid giving him
his chairmanships back, especially if it is over Iraq and Iran.

9. I can't fathom why McBush's lapdog should stay for another second!!!
Just about every photo shot over the past week included a smirking Lieberman standing just behind McBush.

If Reid does not kick this cowardly sack o shit out of the caucus and ideally the party, Reid needs to step down as a wimpy hypocrite. There is no middle ground on this!

14. Fine with me. If he wants to keep his seat he needs to vote like a Democrat.
I won't like it, but if it helps get a healthcare, energy, or economic bill passed then I'll take him.

15. Harry Reid himself is not particularly liberal.
I wish we had a different Majority leader.

Lieberman was handed one of the highest awards his party had to offer, and he showed by his later actions that he rejected it. Now it's time for TRUE Democrats to reject him.

20. excerpt from Traitor Joe's RNC Convention speech:
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 02:11 PM by npincus
entire speech here: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/09/sen_liebermans_speech_to_the_r.html

Senator Obama is a gifted and eloquent young man who can do great things for our country in the years ahead. But eloquence is no substitute for a record -- not in these tough times.

In the Senate he has not reached across party lines to get anything significant done, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party.

FUCK HIM... standing in front of thousands of rabid Republicans and badmouthing our candidate (now president-elect)... kick him the fuck out of our caucus, NOW.

24. Don't Just Strip him of his chairmanship
Kick him the hell out of the caucus, and while you're at it. Why not have a little conversation with Susan Collins to find out why she's a "frickin" Repub?? Offer Lieberman's office, staff, committee seats to the first Liberal Republican Senator to denounce the "r" and embrace the "D".

Jesus Christ on a Cracker!!!!!!

WTF!!!!!

I could understand giving a shit about Lieberman if we had 60 seats when you count his. What the hell difference does it make if we have 57 or 56 seats???????

Think the Repubs will take him? Let them "effing" have him. See how much he loves the cocktail parties and gripping conversation with Mica and Bachman!

Let him loufa with Norm Coleman. Let him party with Saxby Chamblis. Let him attend the white sheet parties at Haley Barbour and Karl Roves house.

Not only fuck Lieberman, but fuck him with a rusted marlin spike!

This decision should be easy. KICK HIM OUT NOW! No need to have a spy in the caucus meetings

29. Not up to Reid. Reid will get his decision from Obama and how Obama wants
to move foward with the senate. I would be surprised if Obama lets Reid alienate Lieberman completely...there will be a gesture made.

I'll also be surprised if Hillary doesn't end up as majority leader with Reid out. Obama is about strong personnel and Reid doesn't fit the bill.

31. I'd still like to know what it was that Obama said to Lieberman
the day after he secured the Democratic nomination. Was that ever disclosed by Obama or Lieberman? Did they come to some kind of "understanding" about something?

In regards to Lieberman, I'm not sure I would really know what to do with Lieberman either. If Joe decides he wants to throw his lot in with the GOP then that's one thing (although I'm not sure why he would do it now) but his stance on most issues other than the Iraq War are probably anathema to most Republicans so would most of them want him anyway?

I think that if he (voluntarily) comes out and apologizes about some of his comments and/or commits to genuinely working with Obama and the Democratic Party then we probably shouldn't throw him overboard. If OTOH he wants to keep up his attacks on Obama (which would be pointless and stupid) he may as well be stripped of his committee chairmanship and left to his irrelevant "independent" self. My guess is, being a smart man, he will probably choose the former over the latter. We'll still need allies wherever we can find them and Lieberman will be likely to back us up on at least most issues other than the Iraq war.
