Michelle Obama
I know a lot of fashionistas compare her look to Jackie-O, and it's true she does the pearls very well, but Michelle's specific color choices for events, no matter what you think of the style of her particular ensemble, remind me of another strong woman who was an icon.

Princess Diana.

IMHO, Michelle wears black/white, or purple, or red (and often dresses the girls in a family version of the palette) to represent her husband's policy choice or whom he is reaching out to at the time.

Last night, Barack was reaching out to red America, in a promise to include them in his blue administration and call for unity. At the same time on Michelle's lovely red dress, black was front and center, indicating how she recognized the powerful significance of the evening.

Often, Michelle wears purple to big, televised events, like the nomination acceptance. Not much blue at all. Because deep inside, she is blue and doesn't need to wear it on her sleeve. She uses her outfits to reach out to invite others to join them with that which is, literally, on her arms.

Diana wore red polka-dots on a sea of white when visiting Japan; many of her wardrobe choices reflected the same respectful thought process. I loved that about her. And I see that in Michelle.

So although they are the new Kennedy family in spirit, I like that one of the endearing parts of another great lady seem to be included in the total package that Michelle Obama is.

3. and in the beginning of the race, neither did Michelle

she seemed to channel her. Maybe she was using her wardrobe at the time to encourage visions of Camelot?

2. Gooe thoughts. Thanks for posting.
I believe she will do us PROUD as First Lady.

She is intelligent, beautiful, dignified, articulate and VERY elegant.

I will be proud to have her representing me for 4 (and please God 8) years.

VICTORY!

4. I love love love Michelle, but her sense of style needs to
be modified to represent a first lady. Her color choices are shocking to see and she needs to start dressing appropriately at least when she is going to be in front of cameras. I personally like Jill Biden. She knows when, how and where.

The dress she wore last night was not appropriate for the occasion. I would have loved to see her with a black dress instead, like the one she wore after I believe OBama won Iowa. - By saying this, i don't mean, i don't appreciate her intelligence, she is a bright, smart and brilliant lady which i am thrill to have as fair lady.

5. Michelle doesn't need to change shit for you.
She is a grown woman and can wear what she wants. Worry about your wardrobe.

8. True, but the First Lady is in the public eye. So, here's my take:
I love the way she looks, and particularly the way mother and daughters color coordinate (also, they seem to coordinate with Barack also, i.e., color of tie.) I loved the convention acceptance night outfits, and I liked last night's also, except for the mild criticism that I wasn't sure about the red streaks on the dress. Liked it, but didn't love it. Malia's and Sasha's dresses were great though, and they coordinated with Mom.

One more thing: I think Jill Biden is really beautiful and I love her clothes, too, but I wish at the convention and last night, she and Michelle had coordinated the color schemes a bit. Jill's red jacket at the convention was lovely, but it clashed with the Obama womens' color scheme. Same for last night; beatiful suit but clashed with the black and red.

Otherwise perfect. Just my 2 cents, and I'm entitled to my opinion.

10. Michelle Obama obviously is her own woman with her own style
She does not want to be Jackie O 2.0 as you can clearly tell. She likes to wear unique clothing. Even if you go back and look at some of her gowns back in 2007 and before Obama got in the race, she wore very bold clothing. She has her own style and a lot of times, people are very adverse to change. She will definitely bring change in her own way to how a first lady is supposed to look. I think Jill Biden wears nice clothing, but I wouldn't say she strikes out in any daring way. Michelle Obama has a flair about her. You wait to see what she's wearing. I don't wait to see what Jill is wearing, even though I heart her.

9. She's the wife of the President, not Sarah Effin Palin or
some bimbo. She can dress however the hell she wants and I sure hope people don't start dissecting her wardrobe now. Her "color choices" and "sense of style" are HERS.
:grr:

Sorry, pet peeve of mine for years. One thing I'm disappointed about - I was hoping the silly position of First Lady that we've manufactured in this country would go away, but I guess we have to elect a woman president before that happens.

7. What was most impressive about Diana-over Jackie- is that Diana
wore the designs of her own subjects.

14. Oooh, I am a clothes-girl, and I love your analysis. I like the Diana comparison.
I like Michelle's choices, even if they are not always the most traditional choices. You are exactly right about the red and black dress last night -- I was thining that it was clear that Michelle was showing that Obama had reached out to red states and had won conventionally very red states like Indiana and North Carolina. She also has a youthful energy that is clear in her clothing choices. I think she will be a real trendsetter in the White House.

18. And I don't want her to make conventional choices, why should she? Many couture designers use
vivid colors.

She should dress appropriately as an earlier poster said in terms of dressing with elegance, but this can be defined in different ways. And I think bold color choices and so on can be perfectly elegant -- look at the designers like Valentino and Versace and Galliano. Some couture designers do use prints as well: Balenciaga and others.

17. Bottom line: I don't care a fig about what she wears!
Why are we even discussing this? There have been WAY too many posts about her dress last night. Your OP is one of the most thoughtful, but how far into the rabbit hole do we want to descend?
