McCain wins Georgia; Senate race heads to runoff

The Associated Press
Wednesday, November 5, 2008; 1:50 PM

WASHINGTON -- John McCain has won Georgia's 15 electoral votes, keeping the state in the GOP column for the fourth consecutive presidential election.

Because of an unexpected low turnout in the Atlanta area, The Associated Press waited past Election Day to call the winner until the number of outstanding votes could be verified.

In the Georgia Senate race, Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss has failed to reach the majority vote requirement needed under state law to avoid a runoff. The freshman senator will face Democrat Jim Martin in the Dec. 2 contest to fill the last seat in the new Senate.

2. Wow. Big ol FIVE (5) percentage point margin of victory for McCain!
Kerry lost by 17 points in 2004. Huge change here.

4. WOW This is incredibly bad news for Saxby Chambliss....
I hope the DNC and Obama Campaign descends on Georgia and helps Martin turn out Chambliss.

5. Well, I will be voting for Martin in the runoff on 12/2. Runoff's
traditionally have a very low turnout, so I'm going to contact my local Dem Party guys and find out who we need to contact to GOTV on 12/2, and get rid of that theiving piece of trash! I THINK the Dems have access to a list of Ga. Dem voters, and we MUST get them motivated one more time this year!

7. A question for Georgia election gurus
Is the runoff election limited to only those who voted in the regular election, or may any registered voter step up now?

9. our paper says it wasn't reported because they left out the early votes

which were huge here.

and of course, Obama was leading in early votes.

I really doubt lower turnout. Come on. Atlanta had 8 hour lines. Karen Handel purged all of those voters she was ordered not to purge.

The internals had this race a lot closer and in fact, the last poll showed obama leading GA by 1 point.

I am deeply suspicious of these results -- but I'll check back in tomorrow after I talk with some of the folks who know what went on behind the scenes. I heard of voting problems in Atlanta -- but I don't have details.

karen Handel is the Katherine Harris of GA, though luckily he didn't need GA to win. Still...we registered 400,000 new voters this summer -- for a total of 500,000 new registered voters from 2007.

The math doesn't add up.

oops- edited to add that I posted about this in a separate thread called what happened in Ga?
