It's been a long time since I've seen so many Americans so genuinely happy. |
|
Republicans didn't act like this in 2000 and 2004, when Bush squeaked through by nefarious means in two late victories that you'd hardly call decisive--and there was always something a little hard and divisive about their celebrations anyway. A kind of, "Our America is better than your America!" attitude that was ultimately responsible for the sinking morale of the country over the last 8 years. Then there are celebrations when a sports team wins a competition, like we saw in Boston in 2004 and Phildelphia in 2008--but those are only confined to single cities or regions, and while exciting, aren't exactly what you would call uplifting on a larger scale.
Last night, November 4th, 2008, at 11:00 PM EST, people of all races, ages, classes and backgrounds rejoiced in neighborhoods and squares all across the country, not as supporters of a triumphant competitor, but as a single mass of people, immensely proud of themselves and of their country. Bill Clinton's victory in 1992 (18 years ago!) is the only comparable event that I can remember in my short lifetime, but last night was head and shoulders above even that.
What a win. What a night. What a country.

That really is the downer of the night. If it's any consolation, you still have friends here.

4. Aren't they still counting the ballots? |
|
Farm animals needed better treatment than they received. Let's celebrate that and not compare the two.

other than the hope we now have that a better future is possible. We still live under Bush policies and the archaic mindset of those who followed his lead. It will change in time for us and for all those who remain under the oppressive ideals of a culture of exclusion. I am hopeful for you & yours, that as PResident Obama makes his way through the mess left to him, we will all have our turn at reaping what is reasonable and most dear to us all.
Your fight is not over either, but I have no doubt that 'your day' is coming to you also.
I am hoping it will be a thing of permanence when it happens. That the laws will be there to support your community of great contributors, with equality and honor.
I believe that with time, as President Obama's call for humanity takes hold, the minds of those so rigid begin to bend. Love & Hope to You Blaze
