From this election onward, the media and the GOP will never, ever, EVER underestimate the youth vote again. :bounce:

I'm 29, and always thought the youth vote was 18-29. So I'll be 31 come 2010. But I'll still be a progressive.

We're in good hands. Granted, my daughter had my sister and myself on edge, since she waited until the last minute to turn in her ballot, but she, and the rest of her generation done good.

11. I remember a posting from a couple of years ago |
|
It was a young Dem who was talking about my own group - the Boomers. The young DUer was lamenting about how my generation had the 60s with all that meant. They said something like, "What do we have, nothing!".
Well, the younger generations have this victory, this whole new era of our country. It would never have happened without you!

12. Deja Vu.... I was among the first 18 year olds to vote in the 1972 election |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 04:16 PM by JohnnyRingo
Through the '60s with the war in Viet Nam in full draft mode, the powers-that-be knew not to let anyone under 21 vote for fear of ending that "Great Asian Vacation".
While our collective vote for George McGovern was unsuccessful, the combination of public protest and our voice in the polls was the beginning of the end for their good times.
We thought then Viet Nam could never happen again, but they got smart and the youth became complacent. As bling replaced cause, and designer labels replaced olive drab, the draft went the wayside to be replaced by higher pay and education options after service. The combination of the birth of the Me Generation and the internet kept young ones interested more in social networking than political affairs and voting. That set the stage for the wars we're in now.
Fortunately, the internet proved to be an eventual double edged sword against the administration, and when things finally got bad enough, it provided a portal that proved the equivalent of the old city squares where we met publicly and burned our draft cards.
I'll let you kids off with a warning this time, but I can't be here forever to remind you of the past... don't let it happen again.

14. Among 18-29 year olds, Obama won 66-31 |
|
That's amazing considering Kerry won the youth vote by only 9 points.
So some on DU last night seemed to only care about how much of the youth vote came out, not the fact that we were Obama's base.

Just more hope that our Nation has so much to look forward to with you all in power in the future. A beautiful youth wanting to change the world, wanting to be of service. RIGHT ON ! THERE IS MUCH HOPE IN THE AIR !!!! I believe in you ! Throughout the campaign, I spoke on your behalf saying "they are a different generation, they are beautiful, they will show up and do the right thing". I was right to believe in you ! Blessings upon Blessings to you all. You will make this world a better place, you already have with your vote !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

35. i think the repubs have only begun to realize |
|
how much damage theyve done to their party the last 8 years. As one who came of age under bush, voting 1st in '04 for Kerry, it is very hard for me to -ever- see myself voting republican and most of my friends feel the same way. Theyve done so much damage, & have been so divisive, think about it- we are of the age that doesnt or barely remembers reagen and bush1. Our 1sthand impressions of a democratic pres. and republican pres. stem from clinton and bush2. Or between the campaigning of bush/kerry, mccain/obama. Thats what we have to go off of. - and for most young people the politics and policies of bush/mccain are hardly appealing to put it nicely. The repubs need to remake their party/image if they want to have a chance going forward. The majority of young people wanted obama, or ron paul as the nominees for the parties. I think that speaks volumes about where our heads are.
