...because unless something big changes, not one but TWO extremely corrupt Republicans (Ted Stevens AND Don Young) are going to win re-election even though every poll showed them way behind. And because the CNN map for AK doesn't cover counties (or boroughs), we have absolutely no idea which parts of the state were close and which weren't.

Idaho now has a Democrat in the House. If Alaska re-elects Young and Stevens, it will become the ONLY state in the Union with no Democrats in the House, Senate, or Governor's Seat. In other words, the reddest state in the nation.

I predict Freepers will begin a massive exodus to Alaska to escape Obama's America and huddle around their Ice Queen.

6. There's a reason why I ask--and it involves Virginia.
Like Virginia, Alaska has many cities that are independent of any counties--such as Juneau, Anchorage, Sitka, etc. That's where a good chunk of the population is--and as you might expect, they're the most liberal parts of the state.

Virginia always breaks late for Democrats because of its MANY independent cities, which always seem to get counted last, giving the Democrats a sudden edge late in the vote count. I'm wondering if that might not be the case here--but CNN says 99% of the votes have been counted, so...

7. We don't even have counties,

we have boroughs, but you're right. At least in the case of Anchorage, the Municipality of Anchorage and the Greater Anchorage Area Borough consolidated some time ago. I'm not sure if Fairbanks is separate from the North Star Borough or not.

From what I understand, though, most of the ballots are in -- it's just the absentees and late early voters that haven't been counted yet.

5. There are about 50,000 ballots still out,

absentees, and early voters from Thursday through Monday which didn't get counted before the election. I'm still holding out hope that Begich, at least, can overcome the 3500 vote deficit. Berkowitz wasn't the best candidate IMO against Don Young -- I'm not surprised he lost, despite Young's "issues."

A lot of Alaskans are very loyal to old Ted, because not only has he brought home the bacon, his office has been very responsive over the years to individual constituents' needs -- including my own back in the early '90s. That wasn't enough to make me vote for him, of course, but many people here are in denial about the convictions.

9. Alaska must be hard to accurately poll, due to its large size and low density, right?
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 04:18 PM by Bicoastal
The polls must have SEVERELY underestimated Republican support out in the tundra.

11. That could be true.
Ted (and Don, for that matter) have been good to the villagers, and they don't know Mark Begich as well as we city folk do, even though he spent a lot of time out in the Bush. I always figured that Ethan Berkowitz would have a more difficult time, because although he's been in Alaska since 1990 or so, he's still seen by many as a San Francisco trust baby Nancy Pelosi clone -- the kiss of death in Alaska, you betcha. :)

8. Well, you betcha they've been counted............
.....and me and John McCain will make sure they all get counted correctly, too! We're not about to let those gidgety-gadget machines tally our vote, no siree! We'll be countin em by hand just like the natives of Alaska have been doing since the dinosaurs roamed this land. My husband Todd's gonna ride his monster snowmobile all over the state justa gatherin them things up and gettin em back here in record time, so don't you worry none, K? Oh, we'll be a hangin them chads and strikin them undervotes, too, so we get a good accurate count!

10. Let them go, and never come back. Just don't give them jobs
in the oil fields. Maybe they can build a bridge.
