Can you recommend places near to Washington to stay in?
Any experts out there in the geography of the area?

What places would you recommend staying in that aren't too far from Washington DC by train? (I know I'm not going to find anywhere too close).

Would REALLY appreciate any advice, I need to get moving on this!

Thanks.

6. Excellent, will look that up...budget:
I'm staying five nights and in my innocence I was hoping to get a room for about $150-$200 a night - I can get that kind of rate if I stay a fair bit away, but I'll check out what I can get in Bethesda. Looks like I'm going to have to do some serious saving between now and January!

Thanks for your help.

3. On a budget? Stay in Springfield, VA. You can easily take the Metro (subway trains)
into DC.

Most hotels in Springfield offer a shuttle bus to the Metro station.

If money is no object, stay in Old Town Alexandria at the Holiday Inn. Fantastic restaurants, bars, historic places, etc.

9. I love the Holiday Inn on King Street
And there's always the Fish Market for a great bowl of chowder, some live music, and good company in a historic building where King Street meets the Potomac River.

Wah! I miss Virginia. I've stayed at that Inn many a time.

10. I took swimming lessons at that hotel as a kid in the 70s.
I had a bowl of clam chowder at the Fish Market last weekend. I love Old Town.

12. wah!!
One of our other DU-ers used to work for Mr. Ray (owner of the Fish Market and other properties).

My old best friend worked there as a piano man. How long have you been frequenting the FM? Remember Buck Kelly? God, some of the best times of my life took place in the Sunquest Room there. Birthdays, graduations, yada yada. We celebrated everything there.

13. Yes. I remember the guy who played the piano there in the late 80s.
Not sure of his name.

14. well.......
...that would not be Buck Kelly, because he played the banjo more than the piano, and he passed away about 1986. Darryl Ott was a long-timer there, but the real star of the place (and the person who is my old best friend) was Ron Trotta. A top-notch entertainer. He was there for about eight years, until 1994 or so.

I once stayed at the Tyson's Corners Hilton for $85 a night. Get a place near the metro, you can ride all weekend for about $15, and It's a really fun experience. Best of luck , there are many places to choose from.:toast:

11. Hotel Americana, in Crystal City, VA (I think)
This summer, we stayed one night at a GREAT, CHEAP place, when the storms forced the airline to cancel our flight home. I think it was called Hotel Americana, and I think it was in Crystal City, VA. The staff was wonderful, they gave us a nice breakfast and made an unscheduled run of their airline shuttle at like 5 am just for a few of us! It was a little gem left over from the 60's, hidden among the ultra modern McMansion monstrosities there by Jefferson Davis Highway. And the staff told us about this wonderful restaurant row within walking distance, and there was this wonderful Greek Restaurant with food so good it brought tears to my eyes (ooh, maybe the Athena Restaurant?). And the people running the restaurant were all so friendly and kind, too! Anyway, the Washington DC Airport magazine had an ad for this place. I'm sorry to be vague, but we were pretty upset, as we don't have much money to spare. We were visiting our daughter.
