Discrimination ALERT! Against O supporters for Voting Obama
From Hannity's America

Reality Bites...I raised their rents today...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I own a 4 unit complex, where the rent is very affordable. I charge $500/mo for a one bedroom including utilities. I sent out a notice this morning that starting January 1st the rent would be increasing $100 per month.

All four of my tenants are O supporters....you should have heard em cry

that is not the CHANGE they had HOPE for!

That's one of the risks you take when you rent - the rent can change at any time. They should realize that.

But then, part of the problem we have in the housing market now is the people that took ARM's and then acted all suprised when the interest rates went up, increasing their payments.

that's fine because I believe section 8 covers 100% of the rent. Thanks to the wealthy tax payers

what is your reason for raising the rent, other than random speculation about your taxes. What "reality" are you referring to?

Well that's fair, that's part of what capitalism is about, if a 20% increase in price preemptively isn't better than what else is around, you probably should have been charging that already, but I'm going to assume that there are better deals around and hopefully they take them up or don't wine about it.

It's less reality and business, are you overreacting? Probably but hey if they don't like it they can move out.

Obama will be sending them the money for their rent anyway. Might as well raise it $300.

Well either they will find other places that did not raise the rates and then unless you did something to justify the rate increase would eventually loose money by loss of tenants. You do not seem to be following the free market principles that are supposed to be at the core of the republican agenda.

I know that's what I'm thinking! Can I move in? I'll fake being a Republican LOL

Though you really cannot base this on tax hikes. The move from $500 to $600 is a %20 hike. I know of no tax plan that raises taxes to this extreme.

What speculation? Obama made it quite clear ..... well fairly clear.........um, kinda clear? .......well anyway, if the OP makes more than $250K, or maybe $200K, or is it $150K today - her taxes are going to go up.

Seriously, why are you raising the rent, just curious. I'm assuming that 1/1/09 is the start of a new lease agreement.

It's his property if he wishes to raise the rent he doesn't have to have a reason other than it is what he wants to do.

Your taxes are going up by 20%? Can you provide a link for this? Has Obama passed a tax bill already, even though he doesn't get sworn in until January?

Joeysgrandma63...you have me laughing...and I think you are being too nice to these people. I rent an apartment and it is nearly 2000 a month for a 2 bedroom. so they are lucky you are so nice. Here is what I am doing now...when I go out to eat I cross out the line that says Tip, and write service was great, but I already paid Obama. send the coolaid drinkers a message that thier income is directly linked to politics. Dems bad for wallet, Conservatives good for wallet...

You do need to prepare against the financial crisis you will be experiencing, and raising the rent is more than likely the right thing to do.

As for your tenants, they'll have to deal with it or move on. I would never want to raise a tenant's rent for "payback", but if the economy really tanks or if your taxes are raised or if you must pay more for goods and services because of the policies of the Democrats (and the Democrat-inspired mortage crisis is a good example), then they have no one to blame but themselves, I suppose, if they want to find a scapegoat for an increase in their rent.

Of course, you'll be labeled as an evil Capitalist Republican vampire pig because of it, but tough crap. You must do what is reasonable without trying to purposefully create a financial burden on your tenants. Doing it out of spite would be wrong, to put it mildly.

4. I believe that in a lot of areas, you cannot raise rent
for no reason. I haven't rented in a while, but I do know that if the tenants have signed a lease, or a month to month agreement that stipulates rent increases, they can fight it easily in court. If they have no such agreement, they should move asap.

he raised it because they're obama supporters, then he's probably in for some fair housing issues.

all landlords raise their rents. i suspect this guy's just talking big cause those types will be busy trying to save face in some way during the weeks ahead.

that said, if it were me and this guy came along and willy-nilly raised my rent because i supported obama, i believe i'd have to put about four coats of flat black paint on every wall in the place during my last week living there.

my guess is, he was going to raise the rent anyway january 1.

I guarantee he is just talking out his ass. Repuke slumlords are far too greedy to follow through on their power fantasies. And who does he think he'll get in to replace those four tenants?

Big talk. Small man.

6. ah, the self-fulfilling prophecy...
they will boycott everything, not buy anything, fire liberal employees, and raise rent on liberals... then wonder why they have no money or employees or renters, and blame it on Obama.

We need a Joe the Plumber to flush these turds down the drain to Alaska.

7. These Freepers are disgusting capitalists who think money
is the most important thing in the world.

I hope that landlord winds up in a heap of trouble, gets fined, gets his face all over local media, loses his tenants and can't find new ones. Greedy vengeful people like this deserve to lose all their good fortune. My opinion.

11. what an idiot. Either he has been undercharging
if this is well below the local market going rate for rentals (doubtful, but possible), or is willing to lose tenants and months of rent while looking for new tenants. So if three of four do not move right away, but a fourth unit goes unrented - he gets an increase of $300 a month, but a loss of $500 (the lost rent for the empty unit) - net change in income for the instant of feeling good at sticking to the Obama supporters = -200$ a month.

Given that the OPer doesn't state outright that this new rent is comparable to local rents (and admitting that he has been losing about $400 a month by undercharging what the market would bare), it seems safe to infer that this new rent would be higher than comparable rentals in the market.

Typical freeper type, completely ignorant of economic realities and prone to acting on gut instincts even when those instincts tend to be misguided.
