Nader Costs Obama from Winning Missouri
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 05:15 PM by Avalon6
Obama lost by about 6,000 votes and Nader got 17,769 votes.

John McCain, Sarah Palin REP 1,442,613 49.4%
Barack Obama, Joe Biden DEM 1,436,745 49.2%
Ralph Nader, Matt Gonzalez IND 17,769 .6%

I'm not really angry since Obama won, just thought it was interesting.

1. At least half of those votes wouldn't go to anyone had they not went to Nader
Nader fans are pretty hardcore. They wouldn't vote Obama if he was the only one left.

3. Yeah, but add .3% to Obama's total and he would've won.

25. There are racists everywhere.
The South's problem is that there is only right-wing media.

Outside of Atlanta and Memphis - which both voted Democratic - there is no alternative to the RushHannityBoortzSavageIngraham glut. Even our newspapers are conservative. People really don't get the information they need to make informed decisions.

I think that the Obama Administration (doesn't that sound great?) should "bully pulpit" for wealthier folks to buy up some stations and put some, at least moderately-left, talk on. That would work WONDERS.

That way, he won't need to "run for president" every time he wants some attention.

16. I've always hated Nader.
If he had his way there'd be a Republican in the White House for the rest of his life time. He knows he stands no chance of winning but he has a huge ego. He reminds me of someone who kills a celebrity just to have his name linked with theirs forever. Yep, he gave us Bush and he doesn't care. If it wasn't for Nader there wouldn't have been a Iraq war etc. I hate him. I hate the very sight of him.

17. On the other hand, Bob Barr may help Obama win North Carolina
Obama currently leads McCain in NC by just 13,000 votes. Bob Barr got about 25,000 votes, most of which probably would have gone to McCain, if anybody. So that would make up for the loss of MO.

And fuck those that voted for this closet Republican narcissist freak this year and in 2000.

24. that's illogical
people who wanted to vote for Obama voted for Obama, people who wanted to vote for Nader voted for Nader. It's not like people couldn't figure out the difference between McCain and Obama. Nader DOES have supporters across the country, even if they're less than 20,000 per state.

30. My uncle voted for Nadar. Otherwise he's a straight ticket
Democrat. He also voted for Nadar in 2000 and 2004. I've explained to him repeatedly that Nadar is NOT a vote for progressive values, he is funded and pushed by Republicans as a way of defeating Democrats. He doesn't care. He likes Nadar. I think he believes his vote doesn't matter, so he can do what he wants.

I'm very disappointed that we lost Missouri. I truly believed up until late last night that we could pull it out, but it wasn't meant to be.

35. Well, no
But if the people voting don't want McCain in office, their better bet was voting for Obama. I don't get what's so difficult about that. It's a two party system. Reality. I mean, if the voter doesn't care whether or not McCain wins, that's one thing. But, I, as a progressive who probably has more in common with the Greens, does. So I don't vote Green. I never will, until they stop being a spoiler party supported mainly by idiots who don't get how our election system works, and actually work effectively to change our country. It's that simple. Fortunately, 8 years of Bush knocked enough sense into enough heads. Thank God is all I have to say. Look, it really is a shame we have this crappy, two party system. No one hates it more than I do. But as long as we have it, spoiling the elections won't change a damn thing, even if we have the right to do so. Just because someone has the right to do something doesn't mean they deserve a pat on the back for it.

38. Progressive?
There is no substantial progress until progressives quit subscribing to the point of view that you just articulated. As long as some folks see it your way, we will always be stuck with this broken two party system.

Please tell me you see how your point of view acts to keep the two party system running.

Let's not do it again, especially when the Greens cost us something very inconsequential this time around.
