Very upset - This is the reaction I heard today
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 07:33 PM by LEW
At dinner tonight I asked my son if the kids in his high school were talking about Obama winning the presidency today. He told me that there were some kids really upset, and one girl threatened to kill Obama, that he was a terrorist. The principal gave them a long lecture over the PA system (good for her).

We live in Illinois, so we are not a "ruby red" state. I think the repubs should be deeply ashamed at the campaign they ran. This is a classic example of the hate and fear they have been selling for years now. Our kids are listening, soaking in their hate and repeating it. I'm disgusted, I don't blame the kids, I blame their parents and the repubs.

This is in deep contrast to last night; I came home from work and was surprised to see my son and about 6 of his teenage friends watching CNN for election returns. They were all Obama fans and wanted to know what was going on. I was so proud, of them.

1. here's what we are up against
son said a girl in school was very upset about the election. Her older brother is in Iraq - she was upset that Obama was going to end the war, and her brother would be out a job.

seriously. I asked him to repeat what he just said, and I repeated it back to him. He said she wasn't the brightest, but still....

This is what McCain and the repugs have wrought. I keep wondering what his mother thinks of the campaign he ran.

5. My brother reported much the same thing at his high school today, too.
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 07:38 PM by Cabcere
:( Lots of really awful, hateful comments (e.g., "I can't believe that n----- got elected," plus all sorts of garbage about the Antichrist and the destruction of America - have they not been paying attention for the past 8 years?!), which considering our very red area of a (formerly!) red state were not surprising, but quite upsetting nonetheless. I think we've definitely got a lot of work to do...

Edited to add that my brother is 17 and considers himself fairly conservative, although he switched his support from McCain to Obama after doing some research on the issues. :) I'm proud of him, even though he wasn't able to vote this time around.

11. I heard lots of people calling each other "comrade" this morning--
of course, these are the people in our company who have the highest-paying jobs, so they're upset they miht have to pay a little bit more in taxes. They're also all megachurch-going fundies who probably are all pissed that a black man "stole" the election. Such good people . . . .

The whole thing with the "Black Panthers" in Pennsylvania yesterday? This kid, who is really a good guy, just went all off on me about the "wide-spread voter suppression". When I tried to expain to him that this was nothing, that Fox Noise was just blowing it out of proportion, and that the Black Panthers didn't even exist anymore, he just rolled his eyes, because he knew it all. He was very quiet today, and he never said a word to me about the election. He hates Biden, and he's afraid of Obama because of his church, so I"m sure he's pretty upset.

When did people get to be so damnned stupid?

14. The nastiest of the righties
tried to sell the whole country on this fear of muslims and antichrists and communists and socialists, etc. The thing is that while most of the country saw it as foolish, it was their own that bought it...and now live in such extreme fear that even their children are filled with it and with matching hatred. Child abuse at it's worst.

15. It's okay. My best friend's step-dad said:
"This is a good thing. He's going to bring us together and unite America, and he's going to unite the world."

This is a guy who comes from Alaska, is fairly conservative, yet does not care about the politics at all. Even he feels inspired! Take the good news with the bad. Not everyone is gonna be excited.

20. the Republicans in office need to talk these people down
They need to tell the people in their states that what they're doing is wrong. Idiots can be funny but when they start talking about assassinations all the time and Armageddon then their senators and congress people need to talk to the states and tell them not to try mass violence and stuff, because this is a DEMOCRACY  it's their crazy bullshit that helped people in the middle vote for Obama.

21. Hey, two four-year-old boys got into a political argument today. Seriously!
One said, "Obama is a loser." I reminded him that he'd won the election. That makes him a winner.

"The other guy was a hero soldier and they beat him up and cut his legs off."

Another 4-year-old boy said, "No he didn't, who told you that?"

"My Dad!"

"Your Dad's a liar!"

At that point I had to break it up.

27. I just saw a bulletin on Myspace that set me off.
Some DJ for a nightclub I friended was posting political bullshit bulletins that I ignored because I know it's just venting and last night the poison was being released. However this guy went one bulletin over the top for me...

I had to say something. I've never even talked to this guy before... I just friended him to find out when the next club events would be, but this guy decided to spew his political bullshit all over the place. My tolerance stops at assassination talk, as it damn well should. Ugh.

So yeah, I'm glad the principal lectured because SOMEONE has to correct this bullshit.

36. I just asked my 6th grader - rethug children were pretty ugly today (mimicking their parents)
obviously. Talk of how Barack Obama was going to "kill us all" and how the country was now going to "die".

At the lunch table, my child is the only child of a Dem - the other children are all heavily (brainwashed?) Rethug as far as can be ascertained - and the counter comments were very, very ugly about mass riots, bloodshed and the dismantling of our "American" way of life by Barack Obama.

But then, I work with a gay guy who is "terrified" of Obama and firmly believes Obama is a Muslim who won't defend our country, and is going to undermine the fabric of our society. He defines himself as a Rethug (but liberal on social issues doncha know...).

Honestly, I continue to be astounded at the overwhelming lack of logic by those around me.....
