This an email I just sent to a Republican friend (yeah, he's a right winger but a good person otherwise, admittedly). Though I'd share.
Dear ----, Are you actually referring disappointingly to the corporate mainstream media that virtually abetted Bush's concocted rush into the disasterous Iraq War? The mainstream media that cycled the Wright and Ayres stories endlessly while saying virtually nothing of McCain's long and deep ties (multiple tropical vacations with him, etc.) to the arch-criminal Keating, ties to G. Gordon Liddy, and ties to some very right wing organizations? How much mainstream air time did Palin's ties to the horrid separatist Alaska Independence Party receive? Barely any. And to say nothing of the neocon-loaded FCC, the consolidated right wing talk radio station media juggernaut, FOX News and its ever-growing local affiliates, the reams of right wing publications, the hordes of right wing think tanks... No need hiding behind right wing talking points about your side losing through "help from the mainstream media." Sad cop-out. Your side has spent years earning these heavy losses in these last two electoral cycles. It is because your party is no longer conservative. It's base has turned ultra-right wing and ultra-corporate, the very turn warned of years ago by true conservatives the likes of Eisenhower and Nelson Rockefeller. There is a new American landscape, and your party had best wake up and understand that its base's ever-nasty right wing propaganda, Rovian divisiveness, medeival social issues positions, hate-mongering, and screw-everyone-else-so-we-can-further-enrich-the-rich bent had better re-bend or it will remain in national minority status for one hell of a long time. We will now have an administration headed by a man with an intellect of the highest order, possessing superior judgement, and the ability to reach people of virtually all persuasions. We finally will have a national leader of profound integrity and grace who will work tirelessly to return an all too divided nation to the unity on which it was founded. America has been lost these last eight years. And now, finally, we'll emerge from beneath this dark cloud and work to find our true and best selves again. And yes, you too will have a place at the table if you're willing to accept the change and work with others. The economy was the largest policy issue, but it was about much more than that. It was about wanting to believe again, wanting to re-discover the best in ourselves again, to become the UNITED States again. Last night was a huge step in that direction. Search your soul. I'll wager that somewhere deep down in there even you feel good about it.
