don't blame blacks for things you don't like that only some individuals do (even if many) |

how would you like to be blamed for things individuals in the group you are in does?
we are responsible for our own behavior as an individual. nobody should be criticized or be lumped in with criticism of those who voted for Prop. 8 simply because their skin color is the same as some of those who voted for it.
(if you see threads that do such a thing, please alert on them as they are extremely disrespectful)

1. You see the hypocrisy on this board today, don't you? |

I am beyond shocked at some of the things I've read on here today. As if there aren't any black gays either who will be affected by this vote.

7. let's not blame all of DU either, it was certain individuals that used that broad brush |
|
they should not do this again and ideally apologize for their insensitivity.
if we are going to talk about black folks as a group, then we should point out the patience and loyalty blacks have had in voting for Democrats and progressive issues in general at a time when their nation and even party didn't reciprocate.

3. Agreed. I haven't responded directly to the implied accusations in those threads. |
|
Just to keep things from becoming divisive.
But in keeping with your observation, I call Bullshit on them here.
Proposition 8 passed with the help of members of EVERY racial and socioeconomic graphic.
One can just as well blame the X% of the lowest income voters in favor of 8, or the Y% of affluent voters as being the group that made the difference as blame the Z% of African Americans, so it's bullshit for it to have even been brought up by them.
It was a close one, too bad really, but no single group's fault.

4. I blame extremist religions |
|
republicans who voted for it (I mean, duh!!) and a dumb system that puts human rights on a ballot. In no particular order. Blaming people of color is just what the repukes love to see. They put things like this up to divide us. Don't get sucked in again. Not you Creekdog, I'm just speaking generally.

5. I think it is awful to blame another demographic for the passing of Prop 8. |
|
To me, the blame needs to be placed on the failure to enforce the seperation of church and state. The Mormon Church is rumored to have put at least $15 million dollars into efforts to get Prop 8 passed. It also annoyed me that priest, pastors and other church leaders used their positions to tell members how to vote.
My hope for the Obama/Biden presidency is that, with their extensive knowledge of the Constitution and the legal history of the US, they will see that things like the seperation of church and state are enforced.

6. I was extremely saddened by what I read. |

When I heard the news, I expressed solidarity with those hurt by the passage of Prop. 8 and the rest of the bills jeopardizing the civil rights of the GLBT community. The next thing that happens is that my people get disrespected and scapegoated. How can anyone learn to be tolerant and understanding of others, when there are people who openly express their racism in such a blatant way without even caring about the feelings of those they hurt?
I'll say it like I told the guy who called me a "whore" on another thread: "You may hate me and be racist against my people, but I will always love not only those close to me who are from the GLBT community, I will love all people from the GLBT community. Your hatred will not change me. I will continue to fight for the dignity, self-worth and equal rights for all."
Even with that said, I still can't believe the irony that is unfolding before my eyes. It makes me cry.
