2. Already a classic.
Like his 2004 convention speech and his race speech were instant classics.

3. It was good,
but it wasn't "I have a Dream" or "ask not what your country can do for you..."

I was actually expecting a much more moving speech than what he gave. It was fantastic, don't get me wrong, and it's OBVIOUSLY going down in history as one of the big ones in part for its eloquence but mostly due to it's historical significance, but I didn't think it was BO's best speech. His "a more perfect union" speech in Philly was better, for example, imo...

6. I agree. He just seemed kinda down to me too. I know his grandmother's
death was heavily weighing on him. I wish his mom, dad, grandmother and grandfather had been alive to see him make history.

4. It's extremely important as an acceptance speech. It's not terribly important as a speech.
His best speeches are yet to come. Can you imagine how people will gather to watch him speak as President? Can you imagine what it will be like to have someone who is looking out for the nation's BEST INTEREST?!?!? It's MIND-BOGGLING!

5. I disagree. It was important.
The tone was just right. He said what needed to be said just when he needed to say it. People will visit Grant Park from now on and say "this is where Obama gave his Grant Park Address."

8. It was great, but I think his inaugural speech is the one that'll go down in history.

9. I am sure it will
But there is no limit on the number of history-making speeches Obama can make.

10. I visit a sports forum on occassion and McCain voters in that forum
(several of them) suggested that it was one of the best they've ever seen and said they were comforted by it. One even said it made his wife cry, despite her voting for McCain, and that now after seeing it he wished he would of voted for the man. I suspect that most of them had never really heard him speak.

11. I still think Obama's greatest speech was the New Hampshire concession (the Yes We Can speech)
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 09:04 AM by alcibiades_mystery
It is how people respond in moments of difficulty and challenge that matters most. Obama responded to the surprise loss of New Hampshire with dignity and spirit. The construction of an American history of struggle was perfectly timed and movingly delivered. The Yes We Can speech is one for the ages. An instant classic in American rhetoric.
