Highly influential. Usually more so than the Vice-President.
The White House Chief of Staff is the highest-ranking member of the Executive Office of the President of the United States and a senior aide to the President. The U.S. President's Chief of Staff is a very powerful position, sometimes dubbed "The Second-Most Powerful Man in Washington"

10. No, and he won't do that. IF he even takes the job,
which he hasn't yet, Obama is the boss. But Emmanuel is valuable. He has been in the White House before so his experience would be very useful to Obama. And he's still a Democrat, and he is a tough bastard, which also might come in handy.

5. Hopefully the DLC won't play a huge role in Obama's agenda, but you are here simply to divide
and spread the seeds of hatred, just like some of those who came here yesterday to rain on our parade...and some of them ended up getting banned for their feeble efforts.

I'd like to see you tell Joe Biden to go away for 8 years. Idiot.

11. Exactly. I'm putting my trust in Obama to pick who he thinks is best to get the job done
It doesn't mean we can't hold his feet to the fire if he doesn't live up to his promises, but people like the clown who posted an OP like that are simply here to split DU in two. They are not who they make believe they are. You don't just go posting a one-liner with no explanation unless you're trying to create divisiveness.

31. The reason they need to go away...
is as much about their behavior in primaries. They played dirty pool to try to secure the (D) for Lieberman over Lamont here in CT in Lieberman's last Senate race (Ultimately it was this support which ultimately positioned Lieberman to run in the GE as an Independent.)

They've a long trail of pushing out Democrats in primaries to run GOPers they've converted...those seem to always bite the Democratic Party in the ass, either in that they go on to vote like a GOPer or that they turn out to be of questionable ethics (The sort of people who jump because your money is good tend to not have strongly-held personal values.) Tim Mahoney is indicative of both. Ultimately the reason they need to go away is not just Obama's win...it's also Mahoney's loss. That's a shitstorm that rest only at the DLC's feet.

DLC successes in gaining seats have been much the result of a disorganized progressive primary strategy. That has ended...progressives have learned something in 2006 and 2008...how to fight. We intend to take you to the fire everywhere with no quarter. You know...progressives and their grassroots efforts...those things that actually win elections, unlike DLC strategy. There will be more fight in progressives than you've ever seen before.

Which is why Obama and Kerry endorsed Lieberman?

Names?

Which is why the DLC picked up so many House seats in 2006 and Senate seats this year?

We intend to take you to the fire everywhere with no quarter. You know...progressives and their grassroots efforts...those things that actually win elections, unlike DLC strategy. There will be more fight in progressives than you've ever seen before.

12. Obama IS a DLCer. Hence his turn on FISA, welcoming Powell's endorsement,
and making REmmanuel his chief of staff. Consulting Sam Nunn and Jim Cooper, who prevented Clinton from being a progressive president was another clue.

People here that thought he was a big time progressive are in for a real surprise.

The good news is he has a more liberal senate than Clinton had, so he might be able to be a more progressive prez.

But I don't think they, the DLC, or the Progressive Democrats should be drummed out of the party...

Look at how the Republicants have cannibalized themselves in the name of ideological purity...They are essentially a regional party or becoming one...

I just hope something happens, it is done right and we at least start down the path to where we need to be. The only people our current system is good for is Insurance Company's.

47. Dave Kendall's plan is similar to Dean's from '04
The closest thing to an "official" DLC health proposal would be the one put out by David Kendall in the 2004 cycle. Kendall's proposal is essentially the same as the proposals pushed by Howard Dean and Joe Lieberman during the '04 race.

20. Apperently President-elect Obama doesn't share your sentiment:
Emanuel likely to accept Obama job
by Politico.com
Thursday November 06, 2008, 4:59 AM

In his first major move as president-elect, Barack Obama has asked Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), a tough-minded tactician with West Wing experience, to serve as his White House chief of staff, Democratic sources tell Politico.

Emanuel has said to friends that he wants and will take the job, but aides said it was not a done deal as of late Wednesday — despite cable news reports that Emanuel had accepted.

Emanuel is “in the process of trying to decide” if he will take the chief of staff post, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) told MSNBC.

Obama plans to move swiftly with his transition announcement and could name Emanuel this week, the sources said. He then plans rapid-fire announcements on his economic and national security teams.

If Emanuel — a member of the House Democratic leadership with ambitions to one day be speaker — were to turn it down, former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) would likely get the nod, the sources said.

are in for a big surprise.

Obama is going to govern from the center and look for consensus with Republicans.

If you are anticipating anything else you will be sorely disappointed.
