Another way to ensure 60 Senate votes
During the last major realignment in American politics in the early 1980s, Ronald Reagan succeeded in getting a number of conservative Democrats to jump ship and join the GOP. Phil Graeme was one of the most prominent examples.

Obama and the Democrats should consider reaching out to centrist Republicans who vote like Democrats and have largely been abandoned by their party. There aren't that many of them, but even a couple of defections would help.

1. Sixty was never a good magic number anyway
We know from past efforts to filibuster judges that some Dems always jump ship anyway.
