2. It has to be a hypoallergenic dog
msnbc should have known that. Some of those choices are ruled ot for that reason.

I like the Shih Tzu and Maltese.

They reported on CNN that they are going to get a rescued dog.

3. For some reason I couldnt' vote but
I'd pick mutt. Also, I read somewhere that he had promised to get a rescue dog. I'd be very disappointed if he did otherwise. Personally, I find breeding dogs, and BUYING purebreds for Chrissake, to be very irresponsible.

But then, I am a cat person, who would ONLY get a cat from a shelter.

one who was a stray that I kept). I just bought a new dachshund pup--there is nothing wrong with buying pups from a responsible breeder who admires the breed and tries to improve it, and I myself absolutely love the dachshund breed. I also prefer purebred pups because you get a clue as to their future temperament, and you can train them right from the start to be sociable. I've had a pound mutt, it didn't turn out well--started growling and snapping at my first baby.

5. Of course, my first impulse is to say "dachshund", but they don't always
get along reliably with kids, and it's hard to find a puppy in a shelter or rescue (and I know those girls want a PUPPY!). Maybe a lab, retriever or spaniel mix of some sort.

9. I had one that recently died, and he loved my kids and all their buddies--
he really never met a stranger. But from everything I've read, there is a tendency in the breed to become a little snappish towards children (as with most small breeds), so I keep that in mind and thus I know to get them socialized to accept children early on. My kids are older now, so I'm going to have to scare up some little kids to tug on my new pup's ears, I guess.

7. Breed-snobbery is part of why we had to work so hard for an Obama win.
Go with the mutt. They tend to live longer than many/most purebreds.

And, of course, get the dog from a shelter.

12. Yay! Mutt/rescue is winning!
All dogs - and cats - need love, but a rescue... they need it so much more, and give it in return with such raw gratitude that it breaks your heart. :loveya:

13. Well they didn't have newfoundlands which are fantastic with children.
However I really do not want my breed to be 1st dog. That is a way for every puppy miller in the country to stock up and start breeding them.

So I vote for a Maltese as they don't shed, their small and can easily go places with the family. I am sure there are many already looking for homes from rescue.
