Barbara Walters repeats Bush lies on The View
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 11:16 AM by Morning Dew
about the Clinton team stealing Ws from keyboards and leaving the WH in disarray. ARRGGGHHHH!!!!

My email to The View:

Barbara just repeated the Bush Administration lie about the Clinton staff damaging the White House, leaving it in disarray for the incoming Bush Administration.

The GAO found no credible evidence of thise. This lie had been repeated often enough to become legend. Please correct this.

But the vandal scandal, tales of torn up offices and items stolen from the presidential jet, was the hottest story in town during the early days of the Bush administration until White House furniture and last-minute pardons pushed it off the front page.

"I think it was this calculated effort to plant a damaging story," said Alex S. Jones, director of the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University. "There was a sort of fertile ground for believing anything bad."

Typical was Tony Snow, a syndicated columnist and former presidential speech writer for President Bush's father, who wrote that the White House "was a wreck." He also said that Air Force One, after taking Clinton and some aides to New York following the inauguration, "looked as if it had been stripped by a skilled band of thieves -- or perhaps wrecked by a trailer park twister."

He went on to list all manner of missing items, including silverware, porcelain dishes with the presidential seal and even candy.

"It makes one feel grateful that the seats and carpets are bolted down," Snow fumed.

Except none of it happened. An official at Andrews Air Force Base, which maintains the presidential jets, told The Kansas City Star at the height of the controversy that nothing was missing. Bush himself acknowledged the same a few days later.

And now GSA has made it official.

"They told me that there were papers that were not organized lying on the floor and on desks; there were some scratches here and there, but the bottom line was they didn't see anything really in their view that was significant and that would appear to some as real extensive damage," said Bernard Unger, director for physical infrastructure for the General Accounting Office, which asked GSA to look into the allegations.

Mark Lindsay, who oversaw the transition as Clinton's assistant for management and administration, said he was pleased that the record has been set straight.

"Because of President Clinton, this was one of the smoothest transitions in the history of the presidency," he said. "This was nothing more than just lies."

21. I remember this clear as day, and I KNEW ...
I was one of those who KNEW this moron was a moron before it happened, and knew we were in for some REALLY bad things when this clown got "elected" in 99 ... I remember this story coming out on Fox News, I have the visual memory - I was at the gym working out and they had FOX on the TV. I heard this story, knew it was complete garbage, and saw it for what it was - these scumbags operating from a completely detached from reality, and bombastically partisan mindset.

That story was a clear precursor of how they would operate for the next 8 years.

But, yes, americans, Al Gore was arrogant, W as a guy you would want to have a beer with and was a uniter who would bring respect back to the office.

6. In this day and age where everyone has a cell-phone camera
or a digital camera (if not both) with them constantly, isn't it interesting that there was not ONE bit of photo evidence of any of the alleged tomfoolery?

11. bwaba, larry king why can't these two move on and let....
some younger up and coming people in the industry have a chance? They've both had long sucessful careers, it's way past time for these two to go. They've both got more money than they could ever spend. retire, travel, take up an interesting hobby. just go. it's time to pass the baton to someone else.

walter cronkite left on a high note. he and his wife were still sailing and playing tennis up in ther eighties and shun the limelight. now that's how you retire.

17. They also said that George Bush was the product of
a good upbringing. :eyes: Apparently their definition of "a good upbringing" is different than mine. I suspect their definition has something to do with inherited wealth and family social position.

24. I called Sen. Clinton's office Thursday.
I told them what was said. I told them I knew it wasn't true,
and it made me mad that they would repeat rumors. They were
interested, but I'm not sure if anything will happen. I
think others ought to call too. The bigwigs have to be worried
that Congress may eat them on some things.
