8. The funny thing is, without the Libertarian on the ballot, it stays Red
He took away just enough votes from McCain to turn the vote. hehe.

11. Oh well, it's a start..and I think once a lot
of people have to give an Obama Biden admin a chance they may see some light.

I use to live in Asheville in '70's..so beautiful and I know it's progressive now in WNC..is that in Buncombe County?

12. Don't Forget Junior Johnson and Andy Griffith
But, most importantly, our local volunteers and the many smart young staff from the Obama campaign.

13. Every change crew in ste state deserves credit
I worked at our local change crew office on Guess Road in North Durham.

We had a total of 115 volunteers canvassing, hanging door hangers and phonebanking, not counting all the poll runners and many other folks. We were one of (I think) five staging locations in Durham.

At 2:00, they called to tell us to shut down and send our volunteers elsewhere because we had exceeded all our goals.

In the end, we did not carry the three precincts in North Durham with which we were initially charged. These precincts have typically voted Republican, but for Democrats in things like the governor's race and for the House. But we won North Durham MASSIVELY!!!!!

How can that be? Because of the EARLY VOTE!!! The data show that we lost 37, 44 and 45 by margins of 144, 88 and 110 votes on election day. (Note that all percentages are expressed as shares of the two-party vote.) In 2004, the northern onestop early voting location was at Northern High. They recorded 5212 votes for John Kerry and 6469 votes for George Bush--so Bush won by 55% and a margin of 1257 votes. This year, the North Regional Library onestop location recorded 10253 votes for
Obama and only 6965 for McCain, so Obama won by 59.54% (OK call it 60%) and a whopping margin of 3288. In other words, WE TURNED NORTH DURHAM BLUE! And not some shitty powder blue, either, but a deep rich shade of blue.

A massive 14% swing, and another 3,000 votes added to Obama's NC margin. Considering the closeness of the election, it is fair to say that every precinct we worked--not just every precinct we won, but every precinct we worked and shrank McCain's margin, was decisive in NC. maybe it did not matter for the electoral vote, but I can tell you as a native North Carolinian that turning Jesse Helms' home state, now the 10th largest in the union, blue is huge.
