So when does 88 year old Chicago native John Paul Stevens retire?
I have a feeling that Stevens has been hanging on, waiting to retire from the Supreme Court when he deems it safe. Now he can hand the decision of his replacement off to Obama, who he no doubt feels some affinity for.

So.....when? And who else goes with him?

Ginsberg? She's 75 and can safely vacate her seat now.

2. After Chimp v Gore, the only way Stevens was leaving the SCOTUS
was after the toe tag had been tied on. He will retire at the end of this term. He has been a great and distinguished servant to his country and to the Constitution. May he enjoy a long, healthy and happy retirement. He has earned his nation's gratitude.

7. We really do owe him a debt of gratitude for staying.
He could have, and probably wanted to retire much earlier, but it seems he wanted to make sure he could do so in a safe environment. Thank you for your sacrifice, Justice Stevens!

6. Russ Feingold should be the next Supreme Court Justice.
He cares about civil liberties.

Voted against the PATRIOT Act.

16. True, but he's also needed in the Senate for the same reasons
We can't lose any more good Democrats from the Senate....especially one who would be a great Majority Leader.

10. My prediction, Stevens in '09, Ginsberg in '10 and one of the Scalito gang has a health issue.

13. First chance he gets, and I think Ginsburg follows him.
They can rest easy--their seats will be in good hands.

14. Probably the best decision Gerald Ford ever made
And yeah, Ginsberg will be gone soon too. She's had her share of health problems.

17. I'm hoping Anthony Kennedy will go too
Granted, he's quite middle of the road. But we need a vote we can count on.
