Where were you?
When you heard Obama won?

I was sitting in a software re-engineering class (where everybody has a laptop)at the University of Washington. Every time Obama won a state, someone in class would excitedly interrupt, "Obama just won Virginia!," "Obama is ahead in North Carolina," etc. The professor would get the class back on track and start teaching again.

Finally, about 8 PM Seattle time, two people in the back row shouted, "He won! Obama won!"

From that moment on, the class was unteachable. The professor tried to get us back on track, but everyone was just too excited. The professor gave up and changed the due time for the in-class exercise we were working on til the next evening. Finally our beloved professor (From S. Korea), who normally goes out of his way to stay out of politics in the classroom, broke in to a shit eating grin and confessed that he too was happy Obama won, that it was a new era for the world.

Three students ignored the impromptu party going on and silently kept working, I assume they are the class Republicans.

One of my friends in the class said it seemed like new years eve!

Where were YOU when you heard?

Please K&R!!

27. Oh I can take a joke. But not the same tired retread assinine jokes that have been going on forever
You want to be funny, go to the lounge. This joke is so stale mold has overtaken it. We're suppose to be celebrating a great victory and what can you do - be an asshole. So if you want to be an asshole, I'll treat you like one.

BTW, your next VP is from Delaware - so go crawl under a rock.

Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 03:29 PM by YOY
Marley was fast asleep and Pepi was nervously flicking the channels. I was on the computer trying to ignore the scary first leaning of Virginia.

I had no tears...just releived shock. I kissed my wife...had one cigarette and phoned some friends to get reactions. Nothing but positive.

7. I was walking past the TV set going to my computer to check the results
When I heard and saw that Obama was declared the winner. I was surprised not that he won, but that it was declared so soon---just a few minutes after my state's (California's) polls had closed. Then a friend called and we shared in the excitement.

waiting for 10 pm (CST) to hear results from CA, WA, OR, etc. It happened so fast - suddenly KO announced Obama was President. We started screaming and yelling; high-fiving, jumping up and down. The dogs were scared. :D

10. A Democratic election night party in Corning NY
I was there working to flip a Republican Congressional Seat Blue for Eric Massa. Massa seems to have won a very tight race so most of us were glued to the local district updates but a wave of cheers and "Yes we can" chants swept the room when it was called for Obama. What a wonderful moment!

12. Dozing off in bed
I heard what I though was white noise from the tv and it woke me up. When I opened my eyes the tv was on a scene from Grant Park and they were yelling and crying except that the sound was so low that it sounded like white noise. The first face I recognized was Rev Jessie Jackson and he was crying so I knew Obama had crossed the 270 threshold. I started crying too and was wide awake after that.

17. Downstairs with the family in front of the TV with the bottle of champagne ready to uncork
I ran upstairs to get the 3 year old who was in a time out (he was just too excited with everything going on and was getting out of hand), and got back, poured the sparkling apple juice for the kids and waited, then they announced him on MSNBC, I uncorked the bottle and we all cheered and danced and it was just like the best New Year's Eve in history.

21. At my favorite pub!
A group of us regulars had decided to watch the returns together, so we sat at the bar coloring in the states on copies of maps in that day's Oregonian. We cheered each state that turned blue, and after about an hour, we realized that the restaurant crowd was joining us. Then at 8:00, CNN's little "Projection" eye candy did its little whirl. We were all expecting another state to be projected, but what came up on screen said, "Barack Obama: President of the United States." It was dead silent for nearly 10 seconds, because no one was expecting such a quick call, and I think no one could believe it for a moment. Then someone on the other side of the restaurant gave a timid "Whoo!" and it was followed by total pandemonium. Everyone was cheering and hugging and crying! It was fantastic!

I'm crying again, just sitting here typing about it!

22. I was watching FOX news at my friend's house
I didn't have a choice, I was out of town and staying at her house. I heard on the radio that Obama won Pennsylvania, but was not too surprised when it took Fox a long time to record that state in Obama's column.

So it was long faces all evening on Fox, although I have to admit I wasn't listening much. Then I noticed right at 9:00 that Obama won. It was a funeral at Fox, and that was the only way that I would have known that Obama won if I hadn't been watching the electoral vote total column! Ha ha.

At some point I said, "I'm tired of watching the funeral, can we at least turn on CNN?" That was better. However, I watched the MSNBC coverage when Obama was announced as the winner on Youtube last night, and that was MUCH BETTER! I would have partied if I had been with my partner watching MSNBC, but instead I was consoling. But that's okay, at least OBAMA WON!

25. At home with my partner, on the couch, watching MSNBC...
I think I was more clued into how it was going than he was, because at 9:57pm our time (Central), I told him to go get the champagne because I was SURE they would declare him the winner at 10 the moment the west coast polls closed. And then it happened, and I looked over at him, and he was already crying as he said, "They wouldn't say that if it wasn't true, right?" Oh man, there wasn't a dry eye in our little house! The cats must have thought we were nuts.

37. It was, it totally was.
People I knew who were worried about "trouble" are kicking themselves.

Yes, everyone was crazy excited. Yes, people were running to get good spots. Yes, the lines to check in were long and the foot traffic was gridlocked. But people were SO GOOD to each other. People got out of the way to help the elderly and disabled along. People apologized when they bumped each other. People who had hi-pricey iPhone type gizmos and were following the latest results while waiting in line made sure to shout out every development so people around them would know. Spontaneous songs and chants. Dancing.

And Barack performed a little loaves-and-fishes miracle. My cell phone battery was almost dead, and yet it still lasted all throughout the speech so that my mom in rural VA (who canvassed her ass off for him) who doesn't have cable could hear it live (and soak up the crowd's joy too.)
