Obama made inroads in Omaha and Lincoln areas

Sen. Barack Obama's appeal to Omaha-area voters in the presidential race was a big threat to Republican Rep. Lee Terry's bid for re-election.
That's why Terry made extra efforts to reach out to Democrats and independents, said his campaign manager, David Boomer.
Among other things, Terry sent postcards to independent women — a group that leaned overwhelmingly toward Democrat Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain — urging them to become "Obama-Terry" voters.
"If you're voting for Obama, you can still vote for Terry," Boomer said.
An analysis of election results by The World-Herald indicates that Terry's strategy worked, allowing the five-term incumbent to hold off Democratic challenger Jim Esch despite a pro-Obama surge that turned the 2nd District into a battleground.
Terry collected about 6,200 more votes than McCain received in the district. If those apparent "Obama-Terry" voters instead had gone for Esch, it would have nearly wiped out Terry's victory margin and set the stage for a recount.
