Politico: Max Cleland in the running to be the new secretary of the Army
Former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) is in the running to be the new secretary of the Army, defense industry officials say.

Should he be appointed, it would be a win after some embarrassing defeats for the Vietnam War veteran, who lost three limbs in the war.

Six years ago, Cleland lost his seat to Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) in a bitter campaign in which he was attacked for being weak on national security. Now, Chambliss is facing a potential runoff to keep the seat.

In 2004, Cleland backed Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) for president and defended him to no avail against harsh attacks by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth on Kerry’s military service in Vietnam.

2. Wow. I'd say he has the right kind of heart and mind for this job.
I don't know what the job itself entails, but it would be great to find Mr. Cleland a good job where he could contribute. He's earned that right.

13. Yes -- I was thinking Veteran Affairs too. But either (or others) would
be great! I'd like to honor this man who was so disparaged by the Repubs.
