3. I have a feeling that Benjamin will be replaced
on the $100 bill. After all Ben, who was a great guy, was never President.

7. Let's get rid of Grant on the $50
He was a crappy president.
Only problem is you have to be dead to be on the money, and we want Obama VERY MUCH alive!

4. Was Lincoln really that pro black people?
Obviously, he freed the slaves but if you look at various things he said throughout his life, he wasn't exactly for equality.Unless, he was just saying that for political purposes...

I think Lincoln would have been quite freaked out by the idea of black president, even though all these toons seem to to indicate he'd be thrilled.

11. Lincoln struggled with racism, yes
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 08:53 PM by Chulanowa
Like most whites of the era, he didn't view blacks as equals. Unlike most whites of the era, he also didn't think they should be unequal. It's a conflict of what you've been brought up with, what society presses on you, and what you know to be right. Lots of Americans face the same struggles to overcome their own biases.

I do think Lincoln would have freaked. I also think he would have realized it's what the nation he ended up dying to protect wanted, and would have recognized the deep importance of this.

15. It might be more correct to call Lincoln anti-slavery
than pro-black. But for 1860, that was pretty damn progressive. They had their own religious whackos back then, too, claiming that slavery was A-OK because it was in the Bible.
