Can anyone remember this (R) Senator's name?
He was part of a committee to approve a nominee, I think it was Chertoff (sp), and so many people said so many negative things about him that this Senator said he could not approve his passing out of committee to go to Congress' vote for approval ...

He actually almost cried at the televised hearing because he could not bring himself to vote with his colleagues.

But then the Pres snuck the guy through in a holiday appointment..Homeland Security..

Anyway, this Senator struck me as one who would be a good republican to place somewhere in a bipartisan government, a good and decent man.

Anyone remember who can fill in details? I am 70, you know, and the ginkgo I'm taking hasn't kicked in yet...

4. Thank you so much
I liked the man very much, and forgot who the devil was they were having the hearings about.

Ya, I think he should be considered.

5. As long as he's not a sitting Senator.
We need all the republican senators with half a brain (re: moderate) to stay in the senate.

6. The Republicans Obama should be targeting for working with
Are Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Fact is if McCain really wanted a viable woman as a running mate he could have chosen either of them. Both smart and experienced and I can only imagine the resentment they feel towards their party after having to watch the Witless Wasilla Wonder parade her double digit IQ around for the nation to see..

9. Yes. These two plus maybe Arlen Specter will give us a 60-seat working majority on some issues.
Of course we'll have shitty corporate Dems like Ben Nelson and Landrieu to deal with too.....

10. I'm from Ohio and I respected Voinovich
just a little bit with that teary speech...
but then, last month:

Here is the quote from Voinovich, reported on first today by the Daily Sentinel of Pomeroy, Ohio, during a visit he made to the Meigs County GOP headquarters.

The paper reported that: "In relation to Obama, Voinovich told the audience: 'He is left of (Democratic senator from Massachusetts) Teddy Kennedy. With all due respect, the man is a socialist.'"

A Voinovich spokesman said what has Voinovich revved up is his belief that Obama doesn't respect states rights, at least not the way Voinovich says they should be treated, under the U.S. Constitution's 10th Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

11. I want Obama to select (R) Senators from states
where a Dem gov can appoint the replacement or special election can be won. Get to 60 sooner rather than later.

12. Wouldn't Voinovich fit that nicely?
A few more good Repuplicans on board in Dem states could get us the 60 majority we need when their good governors replace them with Dems.... In the end, it might do more good that putting a Dem in a key appointment.

14. Ohioan here- Voinovich called Obama a socialist
I was so disappointed when he did so because he had shown some promise. I wrote him a letter, which is something I don't do often.

16. Well, a lot of us don't think that being called a socialist is an insult.
European style socialism ain't all bad.

18. A lot of the "socialist" remarks were triggered by the remark,...
"share the wealth" which was a mistake to say; should have said something about less taxes for middle class and left it at that..
