Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 02:06 AM by Triana
Or - US Ambassador to the UN - whatever.

It will be interesting to see if she accepts. I hope she does!

3. Yes, what foreign countries can she see from her house?
Or at least, can she see an ethnic restaurant or two?

11. Ambassadors don't make foreign policy, so they don't need
that experience.

12. Did John Bolton (Mr. Milk Mustache)? Did Shirley Temple Black?
Caroline Kennedy for the most part has chosen to live a private life, not a public one. That does not mean she has been idle.

She is highly educated and very intelligent. She is well-informed. Barack Obama thinks well enough of her that he asked her to head his VP selection committee.

I think she can do anything she sets her mind to.

Hekate

23. Of course, she's a Kennedy. Plus, she's traveled, and even lived in Greece.

7. That's not really true actually.
They do a lot of under the radar stuff that you won't hear about in the news. They have to be able to effectively report on what is going on in their host country, and also need to be able to develop a personal relationship with top leaders of their host country among many other things. To say they only go to parties and drink wine shows a lack of knowledge about the position.

I really don't know if she is qualified to be UN ambassador. I am glad to see that Obama will try to appoint ambassadors who have actual foreign service experience, not people who donated a lot to the campaign.

16. Good response.
I can see you put a lot of thought into it. Right now I'm actually taking a diplomacy class taught by a professor who has a lot of experience in the foreign service. He is very knowledgeable about the subject so I think I'll go with his word over yours. If you look into the subject further you would realize that you are incorrect about the work of an ambassador.

6. There seem to be lots of rumors about Caroline and ambassadorships
There's one rumor that she'll be appointed ambassador to Vatican City

And another rumor that she'll be appointed ambassador to the UK (Court of St. James)

13. What idiotic comments some people have made here!
There is no better ambassador from the U.S. to the world than Caroline Kennedy. The world will see it as a peace offering, directly related to the world's high opinion of her father, JFK.

He had little enough "experience" to be president, yet is considered one of our greatest presidents by most of the people in other countries. Obama has had little enough "experience" to be president, even less than JFK. Yet he has already changed the world!

"Experience" is bullshit talk. Anyone with intelligence and a good heart can fill ANY political position. That's democracy! If you don't know the details, you learn them. You rise to the position, with your native smarts, and all the creativity and energy you can muster.

Caroline has been a quiet presence behind the Obama phenomenon. She represents the Kennedy family and legacy. She was a member of Obama's VP search team--which is one indication that she has been a powerful influence behind the scenes. It's possible that Obama intended to offer the UN ambassadorship to Teddy Kennedy, but his brain cancer prevented it. And, in the Kennedy family tradition, when one of them falls, another steps up to the obligation of public service. Her decision to lead a private life until now, and to raise her children quietly, after her father, her uncle and possibly her brother were assassinated is very, very understandable. This does NOT mean that she has not been passionately interested in the fate of our country, and in what has been happening to it over the last eight years.

And OBVIOUSLY she has been! Obama would not have been consulting her otherwise. And he would not be considering her now, for this post.

UN ambassador has great symbolic value, as well as practical usefulness in reaching out to the world, and understanding other countries. The symbolic value was acutely noted by many countries, in the Bushwhack appointment of Bolton, who is a hated figure in many places. This was a "thumbing of the nose" at the world--or maybe worse, a farting in their faces, a spitting on their floors. An insult.

Caroline Kennedy will be a healer.

The last time people saw her, she was that tiny girl in the blue coat, in that heart-rending photo, saluting her father's coffin as it rolled by. Everyone in the world knows that picture. It is carved into peoples' souls.

And here she is, a grown woman, emerging from that darkness, to help America join the community of nations once again.

It would be a brilliant, brilliant appointment.

And I do not understand the low-mindedness, and pettiness, with which a few posters here are treating it.
