having a black man in the house as President of the United States? I'm sure many never would have believed a black man would ever be more than a servant in the White House.

He was a notorious racist and segregationist who frequently told "darkie" jokes, discouraged African-Americans from attending Princeton when he was president and defended the Ku Klux Klan in statements.
