Has he won? City could hand close race to Perriello (VA)
More than 650 surprise votes from Charlottesville gave Democratic congressional candidate Tom Perriello an unexpectedly wide lead Thursday in his race against six-term GOP incumbent U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., R-Rocky Mount.

As of 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Perriello had 158,562 votes, compared with Goode’s 157,914 — a 648-vote advantage for Perriello.

“We’re still waiting for a couple localities to report in,” Perriello campaign spokeswoman Jessica Barba said. “But we feel really confident about where things stand.”

Two days after Election Day, the race in the 5th District — which includes Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson — remained too close to call. Neither side had declared victory and a recount was likely.

Democrats across Virg-inia saw Thursday’s lead as an indication that Perriello is on the brink of victory. Virginia’s Democratic Party chairman, C. Richard Cranwell, called Perriello around 5 p.m. to congratulate the 34-year-old from Ivy.

“I have just called what I consider to be Congress-man-elect Tom Perriello,” Cranwell said. “I told him it looks like he was the winner.”

3. I actually remember Goode debating..

Didn't he run for the Senate one year? I mean in a primary or something. I remember him being a Conservative Democrat, but approached all his issues with dignity and class. He seemed to be intellectually curious while still standing by his principles.

Fast forward to 10 years later...Goode is now Conservative, an idiot, a lapdog, doing nothing but spouting hollow cliches. He's careless, a rube, and needs to go. This is also NOT a Liberal area we may be taking...some of those counties are the damn sticks.

2. Perriello gains another 100 votes
Democrat Tom Perriello is about to get another 100 votes in his bid to unseat six-term 5th District GOP incumbent U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., R-Rocky Mount.
This morning at 10:45, Albemarle County was wrapping up its vote canvass and had added 100 votes for Perriello, an influx of votes that would further extend Perriello’s razor-thin lead in the race. Albemarle’s new votes will not be reflected on the State Board of Elections Web site until Friday afternoon.
As of 10:50 a.m., Perriello had 158,562 votes and Goode had 157,914—a margin for Perriello of 648 votes. The new votes from this morning would most likely extend that margin to more than 700 votes.
Albemarle Registrar Jake Washburne said the county’s surprise votes came from the Free Union precinct. When election officials were calling in their vote totals from the precinct on election night, he said, they reported that Perriello had received 442 votes. Friday’s canvass showed they should have reported 542 votes for Perriello.
Perriello has not yet declared victory in the race. A recount is possible.
