McCain was "irked by footage of Obama swaggering along, dangling his coat coolly over his shoulder"
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 12:01 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
From "The Great Debates" article:

McCain's coaches worried about the candidate's undisguised disdain for Obama. McCain dismissed his opponent as grandiose. He found Obama to be affected; he was irked by footage of Obama swaggering along, dangling his coat coolly over his shoulder. For the battered McCain, whose arms were so stiff that he could not raise them to comb his own hair, Obama's smooth-operator style was pretentious.

Edited to add one of the pics that might have upset McCain

22. That is the best way to put it.
You're right. He is a bitter little man. Americans saw that and it turned them off. After all we have been through, we do want someone who we believe will bring this country into the 21st century and work hard to make us a better nation and a better people.

on the catwalk had to be hard to take for McCain. After all, he thinks he's the only war hero in politics and he must look upon Chicken George with disdain for parading his ass in a uniform like a war hero. If McCain could put aside his disdain for Bush, I think there must be a little more involved in his contempt for Obama than just his cool, calm, and collected look.

25. The Post-American World
The right tried to make it an issue on blogs - that he was reading a book by a Muslim calling for the end of America.

The author was Muslim - and also a Newsweek reporter (Fareed Zakaria - sp?). And the Post-American World he was referring to discussed the future economic growth of other nations, not the end of America (I haven't read it, so somebody else can speak better on the subject).

19. and McCain was the quintessential pilot
My father served aboard the Enterprise as an airman, and regularly serviced McCain's plane. McCain was well-known as a cocky, asshole of a pilot who bragged almost non-stop about his 'exploits', flying, family, etc. Hardly anyone who wasn't a pilot liked him, and the others just tolerated him on that ship from what my father recalls.

So for John McCain to have this kind of attitude, to me seems like karma.

68. Hey, some of us still like pleated pants.
Maybe they'll come back in style after Jan 20 and I can wear them again without abuse from my family
(if I can fit into them :eyes:)

79. One question about the PDA
I know President-elect Obama uses a Blackberry (he has been on celebrityblackberrysightings.com) Once he becomes president, will be allowed to use his blackberry due to security reasons?

64. Heh. Nixon/Kennedy redux. Nixon used to get irked that Kennedy was always being shown sailing, etc
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 02:07 PM by yellowcanine
So Nixon's aides set up a photo op of Nixon walking along the beach at San Clemente - in his street clothes, right down to the dress shoes.

"Recalling pictures of Kennedy at Cape Cod, Nixon decided that he too should be photographed strolling the beach. So one summer day in 1970, after weeks of high-level planning, reporters and photographers were summoned to a picturesque San Clemente bluff near Nixon's California home. But when the president emerged, the reporters were stunned. "Good Christ," one remarked, "he's wearing shoes!" The president, marching stiffly across the sands in trousers and formal shoes, looked not Kennedyesque but like someone trying to look Kennedyesque."

85. And note that this "photo op" took place in 1970 - after JFK was long gone and Nixon was prez.
Clearly a pathological fixation.

66. Why would a really short, bald, fat, ugly, inarticulate 72 year old man be jealous of Obama?
It makes no sense!!

I would love to watch that little dork blow his stack good over Obama, and you know he'll be doing that once a week the next four years.

75. That fits.
McCain was a narcissistic spoiled rich brat... a lousy student... a lousy pilot... and a hard-drinking, bad-tempered party boy who treated others (especially women) like shit. His nickname from those days, "McNasty," says it all.

His "war hero" status was something thrust upon him that he merely managed to survive, and he built his entire subsequent career on a carefully crafted mythology surrounding it.

Now, in his declining years, he's lost what he feels has been his due. He's been defeated by a brilliant, graceful, faithful, honest man who actually cares about the people who make up this nation as well as the rest of the world.

Sorry, McNasty. Your sense of entitlement and your bitterness mean nothing. Your day is done.

81. My God, talk about petty jealousy. It was not Obama's fault that McCain was a former POW
and had injuries. I also disliked his use of "Joe the Biden" for his "former " friend. McCain's jealousy and dislike for both men showed through during the campaign. Barack and Joe always said nice things about McCain personally and while many here did not like that it served to show a contrast to McCain's and Palin's pettyness.

105. Excellent point about Saddleback that I'd missed
from the newsweek article linked in the OP:

He knew that he had delivered a mediocre to weak performance at the Saddleback forum in August. In what amounted to a preview of the formal presidential debates, the two candidates had agreed to be interviewed back to back by the Rev. Rick Warren, the bestselling evangelist, at his megachurch in California. McCain delivered short, punchy answers, and most pundits declared that he had won the day. Obama plowed along in his ponderous professor mode.

I guess we should thank Rick Warren for those sandbag questions and ridiculous format. It was a wake-up call and made Obama redouble his efforts to shine in the debates, it would appear.
