2. The US was ready to elect a black candidate as prez in the '90s.
Surveys my firm did showed this also.

5. Sure - when he hasn't had many millions used AGAINST him and linking him firmly with GOP policies
he has helped protect.

That would have been SOME performance from Powell trying to balance his loathing for the RW with his protection of RW leaders and their illegal operations.

11. Thar's a big assumption;

If you remember rightly Powell dropped out over accusations that his wife had mental problems ( Rove at work ?). Who knows where the smear machine would have taken us. As for the assumption that we were ready for a black president.......I think that was a stretch also ,but never the less, interesting.

14. Oh. I agree;
He had nothing to do with the Buhies after the U.N. speech and told them "if you break it you bought it". For my mind , I would love to see him in a cabinet post or an adviser.

15. I honestly always thought the first black President would be a Republican.
I was convinced that it was going to be Powell. If the Bush family hadn't have had such a stranglehold on that family, it probably would've been Powell.

17. What is your point?
Powell's a good man? Powell is a good republican? Powell was a good SOS? Your "firm" is good at polling?

My point is that Powell is a lying sack of shit who trashed everything he worked for and believed in, i.e; "the Powell doctrine", just to be Bush's waterboy. He didn't uphold his oath to the constitution, he sold his integrity for loyalty to the republican party--and loyalty to one man: GWB. He bears a large responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children because of his loyalty to GWB. Then he was summarily scapegoated and cast aside by the people who used and abused him.

So what is your point? Are you and your "firm" rehabilitating his image?

21. I'm not sure this is relevant - you are talking about a poll on a candidate
who did NOT go through an election season being placed up against candidates who JUST went through an election season.

I have a hard time believing Clinton was losing in 1996, whomever the GOP ran.

23. Ok, but do you agree with what I am saying about comparing apples to oranges?
Because I think that is what polling on a non-candidate equates to.

24. Yes, but Powell is truly a teflon guy to an amazing extent.
I think the press would have been VERY easy on him.

For good or bad, depending on one's opinion of him.

25. Yeah, I can't see Powell waging the sort of negative campaign that would have been necessary
The challenger to a successful incumbent must tear down the incumbent's reputation and show that the challenger is even better, despite the incumbent doing a decent job. That's probably the biggest reason that Kerry lost: somehow, the majority of voters still thought that Bush was doing OK.

Really, Kerry gets way too much flak. He was an above average candidate who ran an above average campaign but faced enormous obstacles (Bush's remaining popularity, the unprecedented Swiftboating, Kerry's own inconsistent record on the war, Bush's huge war chest, Karl Rove's talent at its peak) and he still nearly won. It was Gore who managed to blow a winning hand with a lousy campaign.

27. I like Powell
I'm not petty...he redeemed himself a long time ago when he turned his back on Bush.

IF it weren't for black politicians before Obama, Obama wouldn't be in office today. Powell is the second most liked and respected black politician today. IF I am missing someone, I apologize. Obviously it isn't Rice.

Powell helped warm the weary Americans who were unsure about black people in power.

Show some respect.

Bush got us in this mess. Powell helped until he didn't want any part in it anymore. Is it possible for a man to redeem himself?

28. i agree
and for whatever is the sum of the man, that endorsement he gave Obama was one of the most moving moments of the campaign. The photo of the muslim woman was something i'll never forget.
