Thought I'd share something touching I noticed Wednesday morning... |
|
First of all, my own Obama/Biden sign had been taken, but I don't know why. Maybe someone wanted it for its historical significance. It didn't bother me since Barack had won, and that's what it was all about for me.
What really touched me though was driving down the street on my way to work in a neighborhood one would expect voted almost exclusively for McCain, I turned the corner at a house where a retired Marine lives. He has the usual flagpole, and is always decorating his house beyond your imagination for every holiday -- I assume to delight any children who pass by or the "child" in each of us. Anyhow, he had placed campaign signs in his yard some time back that included McCain/Palin. This didn't surprise me. What caught my eye was that on this morning he now had taken down all signs and placed an Obama/Biden sign at the foot of the flagpole! I almost teared up because as a former Marine myself, I knew what he meant. He was saying, "This is my new commander-in-chief now." You probably have to have been a Marine to appreciate what that meant, but it spoke volumes about my neighbor.

2. I have heard several conservatives call into a local radio show, |
|
and a couple in town say, "He won, and, now he is my President." I find it very touching.

10. Exactly. My Dad was a marine until the day he died. |
|
And this is just what I'd expect a real marine to do.
Tell yer neighbor my Dad is most likely sending a ghostly "hoo-raw!" his way.
appreciatively, Bright

I wasn't sure others would "get it". I'm glad to see his gesture has meaning for others. It's quite a lesson. I've watched this couple over several years dutifully decorating, even though he'd often have his wooden cutouts stolen, he'd keep putting up more and never give up. He apparently has had some serious health problems, but his leg is in a brace now, and he has rejoined his wife in the decorating and gardening as best he can. But that one act said so much to me.

11. IMHO, that has got to be, if not, the most beautiful story coming out of this election. |
|
Thanks for sharing. On another post I read that Hannity was besides himself with rage when Gen. Tommy Franks told him that his loyalty now belongs to President-elect Obama. It just made me weep tears of gratitude and so does your neighbor.

15. The healing has begun. I'm so damn proud to say I'm an American again (as I bittersweetly prepare |
|
for temporary residency in Germany).
