1. Rahm means "cream" in German. And, I would assume, in Yiddish.

What is the Hebrew word for thunder? The Hebrew word for thunder is baraq (ברק).
The Hebrew word for lightning, that flash of light in the sky, followed by thunder, is ba·raq, with the emphasis, when speaking, on the last syllable.

No reference found for Rahm as either thunder or lightning.

3. Rahm actually means "high and lofty"
Certainly our sledgehammer, potty-mouth chief of staff isn't exactly that! (I mean the adjectives in a good way!)

As for Barack, I think it's the Arabic version of "Baruch" which is a blessing. That, OTOH, is TOTALLY descriptive!!!

But then, who am I to argue with real Jews when I'm just a half-breed myself?? And a non-religious one at that! Thunder and Lightning works for me.

10. Baraka
http://lexicorient.com/e.o/baraka.htm

In Islam, divine blessing that is normally associated with holy men or women, waliy, either in life or in death.

Baraka can be transferred from one person to another, or from a material item to a person. Common in Islam is baraka that comes from local shrines, but the strongest baraka is in Mecca, and then especially, at the Ka'ba. Pilgrims returning, are carriers of baraka, as well as bringing with them baraka in the shape of items from holy places. One of the more popular baraka-carrying items is water from the well of Zamzam.

http://www.phrasebase.com/blog/meaning-of-baraka.html

Barakah has Arabic origins meaning spiritual wisdom and blessing transmitted from God (Arabic: Allah) to any creature he wishes to bestow it upon.

Barakah (or Baraka) is a term referring to a sense of divine presence, charisma, wisdom, and/or blessing transmitted from master to pupil. It can refer to “breath”, or “breath of life” (see Qi or prana), but is more often associated with a place or person. It is also a Sufi term referring to a sense of “divine presence” or “charisma.”

Baraka is also used in contemporary French as a synonym of “luck”. A person who has the “baraka” can emerge unscathed from the most dangerous situation. This use of the term derives from the time of French colonization in Algeria (1830-1962).

17. This is very interesting. Might you be able to tell me if any of the 3 Wisemen were Islamic?
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 10:05 PM by 1776Forever
I have read that Jesus is considered a prophet in Islamic belief, and would like to know if there is any mention of "wise men". I believe these Kings or Prophets might have been astrologers.

Thanks for your time -:hi:

19. Islam didn't exist then, so no.
They may well have been of Arabic or Persian heritage, though. As with Christianity, a lot of older tribal beliefs and knowledges found their way into Islam.

20. I believe they are thought to have been Zoroastrian priests. This is from an

article about them in wikipedia:

"As part of their religion, these priests paid particular attention to the stars, and gained an international reputation for astrology, which was at that time a highly regarded science. Their religious practices and use of astrological sciences caused derivatives of the term Magi to be applied to the occult in general and led to the English term magic."

I believe they are considered to have been Persian.

Legendary relics of the Magi are held in Cologne Cathedral.

dangerous situation. This use of the term derives from the time of French colonization in Algeria (1830-1962)."

I know a priest who was told by a an old chaplain to the French Foreign Legion during WWII that he obviously had the "baraka". He had had some amazing escapes from accidents - one, a road accident, I recall.

I think Barak is a "man of destiny", and as such, if Churchill and Shakepeare (as well as MLK's prophetic visions) are any guide, could have had some intimation of it in his youth.

Re the old French Foreign Legion chaplain, he used to love to recount the story of how he once fell in a vat of wine, and proceed to conjure up the vision in Isiah 63:1:

"Who is this coming from Bozrah in Edom with his clothes stained bright red? Who is this dressed in splendor, going forward with great strength? 'It is I, the LORD. I am coming to announce my victory. I am powerful enough to save .'"

22. Usual response when someone says to you: Salam alaykum
Salam alaykum (Peace be upon you)
Wa alaykum salam wa-rahmat Allah was barakathu (An upon you peace and the mercy of God and his grace)

Mabruk is often used when congratulating someone (similar to mazeltov)

12. This has now got the song "Knock on Wood" running through my head because of the line in it
"It's like thunder and lightning"

"Knock On Wood"

I don't want to lose you
This good thing
That I got
'Cause if I do
I will surely,
surely lose a lot
'Cause your love is better
Than any love I know
It's like thunder and lightning
The way you love me is frightening
You better knock, knock on wood, baby
