Emanuel: Democrats Missed Opportunities

Morning Edition, October 17, 2006 · Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), a former Clinton aide, says it has been 10 years since the Democratic Party outlined a clear vision for the country.

In the last two presidential elections, Democrats failed to capitalize on two "branding opportunities" for the party, he tells Steve Inskeep. Emanuel, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, says that by focusing on the personal stories of former presidential candidates Al Gore and John Kerry, Democrats missed the opportunities to tell voters what their party stands for.

He says Democratic candidates this November will strive to be clearer about the choice that voters face. For him, the choice is between Republicans who will stay the course on the economy and Iraq, and Democrats who will go in a new direction.

I hate Inskeep but am glad to hear Rahm Emmanuel stand up to his junk questions.
