An interesting comment RE: Prop h8:
Bolded emphasis mine. A good suggestion for how to win next time.

The Obama victory was undoubtedly historic and groundbreaking, but it has come at a price: the aggrandizement and intensification of hostility between Blacks and gays. The irony is as ugly as it is heartbreaking. The betrayal gays feel can be summed up pithily: how is the outlawing of same sex marriage any different from the anti-miscegenation laws of segregation? Some may point to religious values as the discriminating factor, but "Christian values" were used to justify anti-miscegenation just as they are now used to justify the revoking of same-sex marriage. Hiding behind the Church, then and now, does not absolve anyone of their complicity in discrimination.

But the failure to defeat Prop 8 does not lie with the Black community or any other minority. It is the gay community who has failed to build coalitions with other groups. Wake-up call to gay leadership: We must form institutional alliances with other minority communities and start supporting each others interests. We are not going to see these groups support our right to marry if we do not make an active effort to support them as well.

1. Thom Hartman thinks Mitt Romney was behind
Mormon support on Prop 8. His theory is Romney is behind the Mormons on this in order to get favor with the Christin Right. Also it is the former Romney people that are dissing Palin. So he eliminates Palin as competition and by the Mormons opposing Prop.8 it give them credibility with the Christin Right and makes him a shoe in for a run for POTUS in 2012.

3. Makes a lot of sense.
There should be a statewide effort to develop a multi-faceted plan of attack. Enlisting the assistance of all groups sympathetic to the cause would be great.

4. We were all complacent, and focused on the White House...
And we let our guard down.

My local Obama office worked only on Obama and on McNerney, we never openly discussed strategies re: the propositions and it would have been smart to include these.

It's an oversight of serious proportion, and I agree that there is a need to form broader coalitions.

We became complacent, we didn't expect it to pass, and at the end, we fucked up.

6. It's inaccurate to say LGBT people don't actively support other groups
So I think that last sentence us just bullshit. But I do agree that a greater effort has to be made to build coalition and to create common cause. I also think the anti-8 effort was mismanaged, but that's another story.

9. Having worked for a non-profit animal rights org for several years
I know how hard it is to organize any kind of movement and if you can manage to get it organized, if you don't have really strong leadership, you're screwn!

What I think really hurt No on 8 was when the yes folk rolled out the "kiddy" ads.

Another thought is that some people may have thought they were voting YES to allow gays to marry, because logically that makes sense.

8. oh yes, the chickens and cows did a much better job building coalitions
and got their bigger cages.
Those poor silly gays just didn't do a good enough job of getting civil rights activists to support civil rights for everyone.
