Of course, there is Full Metal Jacket.
And how about Biloxi Blues? I think this his is one of the most underrated movies when it comes to capturing what military life is really like. Very, very accurate.
Then there is Black Hawk Down.
But the one I can watch over and over again is The Thin Red Line. Something in this movie grabs on to me.

Apocalypse Now, and Dr. Strangelove. I remember the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan. Had no idea what to expect. The first twenty minutes of the film had me shocked and in tears. I'd never seen anything so visceral in a Hollywood movie up until that point. And in the context of brilliant filmmaking, probably never will.

12. I forgot to mention Glory. Great Civil War epic. |
|
I also enjoyed The Patriot, to a certain extent. I think it had a decidedly Bruckheimer-ish vibe, which hurt it some, but I thought the production values were good and the father/son dynamic was excellent.

I also recommend the great literature that came out after the Great War (World War I). I particularly recommend Vera Brittain's memoir Testament of Youth, and the earlier 1929 version of Robert Graves's Good-Bye To All That.

I'm going to have to add it, though, again, it's not from the American perspective - "Night of the Generals" - love that movie. Not a tearjerker, but Peter O'Toole as the psychopathic general was chilling.

"Big Red One" "Battle of the Bulge." "Three Kings" "Saving Private Ryan" "Glory" "The Deerhunter" "Platoon" "The Dirty Dozen" "We Were Soldiers" "Pearl Harbor" (yeah, I know...) "Gettysburg" "Hart's War" "Night of the Generals"
Special mention for "Schindler's List," not listed because it's not technically a "veterans" movie, but one of the most important films ever made.
