Poll question: Should Obama cancel Inaugural celebrations.
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 05:18 PM by Perky
Bush canceled the Balls because we were a nation at war. Given the Serious state of affairs,,,,,,should we get to work immediately rather than party all night long?

10. useless symbolism doesn't do much for me.
I want people to do things because they think those actions will solve problems.

All of the celebrations will be terrific for low wage workers hired to make them go off without a hitch: caterers and limo drivers and beauticians and DJs, and on and on.

And we do have real economic problems, but we also have a crisis of confidence, too, that is keeping our economy down. People who are doing fine financially themselves are doing all sorts things that aren't reasonable actions because they have been scared by the media. Celebrating Obama's win is a way to advertise and promote that he has been given 4 years to get a lot done to help the country.

12. Other: plan for it but see how things are going in January
If things aren't dramatically, DRAMATICALLY worse then a celebration is in order.

15. FDR didn't have any celebrations in 1944.
He was sworn in at the WH, short speech and back to business. Bush didn't cancel the 2005 balls.

FDR was also going on his 4th term, we were coming towards a critical stage of a world war, and he knew he was dying.

If memory serves, he's the only POTUS to wave any celebrations.

19. It's hard to say what's best.
It is a very well deserved celebration. However, it doesn't need to be over the top expensive. Seems like I recall Bush's last one being embaressingly expensive. There is no need for that. But how and where to cut costs, don't know. Or, how about making a very GREEN celebration with little or no waste, OR spend only what's left of the campaign contributions and nothing else. It's a tough one.

Canceling would hurt a lot of local businesses that have a stake in the inauguration.

29. Consider it "economic relief" for D.C.
Seriously though, it can be a blowout without blowing out the budget for it. Obama seemed good at managing big events during his campaign, I'd bet that he will be at this too.

35. Jesse Ventura did it right
When he was sworn in as governor of Minnesota, he dispensed with the traditional stodgy (and expensive) black tie balls and had a massive blow-out at the Target Center arena and charged 10 bucks a person.

43. Cancel? No Way!! I think we should celebrate the end of 8 years of oppression !!
Besides, I have a feeling that the people being invited to those parties will be the more common people of this land. Not just the rich and famous and the tycoons of big business, like bush did at both of his parties. I want to see the parties and who is there and what they're wearing and eating the decorations. Why should President-Elect Obama be denied a celebration? I think America needs a party, a time to take a breather for one night, then we will all roll up our sleeves and get back to work. Things may not be so good with the economy but that doesn't mean we have to all be depressed and serious about it 24/7. There's a time to celebrate and a time to work. I think the nation could use a little cutting lose to relieve the tension of the last 8 years. I didn't really hoot and holler on election night. I was busy moving, so I, for one, would like to party for the inauguration! :D
