Obama Positions Himself to Quickly Reverse Bush Actions on Environmental, Social Issues

By Ceci Connolly and R. Jeffrey Smith
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, November 9, 2008

Transition advisers to President-elect Barack Obama have compiled a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone to reverse the president on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues, according to congressional Democrats, campaign aides and experts working with the transition team.

A team of four dozen advisers, working for months in virtual solitude, set out to identify regulatory and policy changes Obama could implement soon after his inauguration. The team is now consulting with liberal advocacy groups, Capitol Hill staffers and potential agency chiefs to prioritize those they regard as the most onerous or ideologically offensive, said a top transition official who was not permitted to speak on the record about the inner workings of the transition.

In some instances, Obama would be quickly delivering on promises he made during his two-year campaign, while in others he would be embracing Clinton-era policies upended by President Bush during his eight years in office.

"The kind of regulations they are looking at" are those imposed by Bush for "overtly political" reasons, in pursuit of what Democrats say was a partisan Republican agenda, said Dan Mendelson, a former associate administrator for health in the Clinton administration's Office of Management and Budget. The list of executive orders targeted by Obama's team could well get longer in the coming days, as Bush's appointees are rushing to enact a number of last-minute policies in an effort to extend his legacy.

1. Damn Fucking Straight.
Good thing, too, because the vast majority of Americans don't agree with the religious right nuttery of the GOP on these matters.

4. I just had a feeling.....
every time I heard him say that when elected he would go line by line through the Federal Budget...
and in statements where he said that he will look over everything that Bush made into law...

I thought....I'll bet he has a team already at work scouring over documents...
making notes and recommendations for Barack to start in on Jan. 21st.

I'm so glad to read this...especially in the light of all the crap Bush is trying to pull now...
I'm glad Barack can put a stop to his shenanigins...

6. I have no doubt he's going to hit the ground running.
And not a moment to waste, either, with Dubya doing as much damage as he can, while he still can. Why does he hate Planet Earth, I wonder?

9. this is why I ignored the handwringing over uranium mining yesterday
unless bush actually goes out and kills the last of an endangered species, or poisons wells, or something, there is little he can do in his last-minute flurry of unitary pretzledunce orders.

I bet Obama's people feel like they are playing whack-a-mole, though

10. Hahahahah! Yesssss! Bush came in with his list in 2000....
And proceeded to check the items off one by one. It was almost a daily piece of news what Bush had singed off or signed away or refused to renew or implement. The refusal to ratify the renewal of the Kyoto agreement stands out quite clearly/

All these years I've been saying we need to come in with a list of things to annul, revive, and renew. AND IT'S HAPPENING! I can hardly believe it!

13. any precedent on a current president reversing a previous president's signing statements?
Those 200 actions and executive orders should just be the tip of the iceberg.

14. I read somewhere that Bush upended over 100 of Clinton's environmental policies
as soon as he took over the White House.

I forget the actual number, but it was so sad to know back then what damage Bush and his cronies would be doing to our precious wildlife and forests, and sure enough, they pillaged the environment as best as they could for 8 long years.

22. though Clinton (from what I understand) did a lot of last-minute
signing too, lots of environmental laws on his way out the door / the last 75-or-so days. Maybe he couldn't have gotten them thru any other way, but I was mildly pissed off at him for doing so many pro-environment things at the last minute, when he had YEARS to make a difference in the agencies like EPA, Interior, etc. Oh well.

It is our turn once again to try to care for the only home we have, the earth, and I can sleep at night now knowing someone responsible and thoughtful is in charge.

17. Please forgive the stupid question but...
do you feel it is likely that Obama could use the executive privileges Bushco instituted in order to REVERSE what Bush has done, and THEN restore the Constitution, taking away the executive privileges Bushco bestowed upon themselves?

18. I don't know what his intentions are, but I'm
going to be watching with glee how Obama handles all the havoc wreaked by the current admin.

I am satisfied knowing his goal is the same as ours; he's surely aware of what's been done, especially as a Constitutional lawyer. I'm equally sure he will try to correct the damage.
