In case anyone wonders why MO voted for McCain:
Neo-Nazis march at Missouri Capitol
The Associated Press

JEFFERSON CITY | Just over 50 neo-Nazis chanted anti-immigrant and anti-minority slogans during a two-hour march in Jefferson City, finishing at the state Capitol.

Spectators lined sidewalks along part of the route today, but there was no violence. At least two counter-protesters were handcuffed. But it's unclear if there were more arrests and a police spokesman did not immediately return a call.

A tense moment occurred as the neo-Nazis, protected by police in riot gear, marched back to their vehicles while exchanging taunts with demonstrators.

The neo-Nazis delivered a series of speeches for just over an hour from the Capitol's steps.

Most focused on condemning politicians, the federal economic bailout, Jews and minorities. Although newly elected President Barack Obama was mentioned, most of the speakers said Republican John McCain was no better.

6. You think 50 neo-nazis are why MO 'voted for McCain'?
I have news for you: every state has people like this in it. Missouri is as purple a state as they come, and if turnout had been 1% better in KC and St. Louis, we wouldn't be having this conversation. So please stop making moronic broad-brush generalizations about my state.

7. Northern Idaho had some neo nazis move in from elsewhere and to this
day people think that Northern Idaho is a hotbed of racism.

When they had an opportunity in a civil suit they handed the neo nazis compound to the protestors.

Northern Idaho still has a lot of very conservative people but that doesn't mean tha they are racists.

I wonder how many of these folks are even from MO.

10. I think racism is the reason Obama lost MO
It's my state too. And I have been sickened by the bigotry in MO all my life.

8. Umm, these people were not only from out of town, but out of state
These are the same idiots who marched in Columbia a few years back. They tried to make a return engagement this year, but their permit was turned down due to conflict with the MU/K-State game, so they moved their march to Jeff City. Every single one of them is from elsewhere, including Illinois and Tennessee.

Given that they have First Amendment rights also, they can come in and march, much like they have elsewhere, including states like Ohio, Florida, Oregon, and D.C. The First Amendment applies to everyone, thus we have to accept the good with the bad.

You're leaving out the fact that the Jefferson City city council and mayor urged the public to stay away from the march, to not validate it with their presence. You're also leaving out that the NAACP, along with groups from around Mid-Missouri held a counter-gathering, complete with speeches, food, etc. that was quite well attended in McClurg Park.

As far as McCain winning this state, the SoS is still out on that one. There are something like 17,000 provisional ballots from urban K.C. and St. Louis that have yet to be counted. Given that generally 2/3 of these ballots are generally tossed, that's still enough to eek out a narrow Obama win. We won't know for another couple of weeks however.

But that aside, what the hell happened in suburban KC? Really now, this was the year that Jackson and Clay counties were supposed to go blue, instead they went red again, much like St. Charles county on the other side of the state:shrug: What happened? Hell, even Iron county went for Obama:shrug:

Please, I realize that this state contains many RW fundies, many, many conservatives, but don't paint us all as Neo-Nazis, simply because, for now, the state fell under 6000 votes short of going for Obama. That's not right, not fair, especially to those of us who've worked our ass off for years and decades to change this state, and have made a fair amount of progress in doing so. I realize your disappointment and disgust, but really now, Neo-Nazis? That's a low blow.

15. Why did they pick Columbia two years ago? Why did the pick Jeff City, home of Lincoln U?
To do what they always do, get the biggest possible reaction. That's why they target places like Skokie, liberal cities like Columbia, or African American communities, like the one surrounding Lincoln University in Jeff City. They want to get the biggest possible outcry of rage, to bring the most possible attention to themselves. They make these choices based on which communities disagree with them the most, not those who disagree with them. That's why you don't see Neo-Nazis marching in the South, or Idaho, where the communities are more akin to them in political outlook. Do you actually think that they marched in Columbia because they thought the populace agreed with them?

13. Ditto on what Terran said
Quit painting MO with such a broad brush. 6,000 votes short and you guys are treating Missouri like its fucking Alabama circa 1960. I live in Springfield, the "racist-Bible Belt area" and we had the closest margin in Greene County since 1976.

So don't act like the whole state sucks...its just truly and literally, in every sense of the word, a PURPLE STATE.

18. Umm, are you going to provide equal snark for the other states
Such as Ohio, Florida, Oregon and others where the Neo Nazis marched, or is this simply another way to bash Missouri?
