***PSA: HOWARD DEAN IS QUITTING THE DNC IN JANUARY****
Many here seem to unaware of this fact. He doesn't want to stay in a position that's simply an arm of the WH. He's made that clear since he took the job 4 years ago.

I've heard him say it repeatedly- most recently on VPR.

He's absolutely, positively not interested in staying on as DNC Chair.

33. Obama can't "put his person in". It's not an appointed position. Dean was voted in and had
competition.

12. A politician never says never, and Dean hasn't said no. What he said is ........
Interviewer: "Governor your chairmanship of the DNC is coming to an end in January, can you tell us what you are going to do next?"

Dean: "I don't know, that is partly going to be up to President-Elect Obama."

Dean is interested in the HHS position, but not interested in the DNC chair again.

18. Rumor has it Ickes wants the job as DNC Chair. I vote no on that.
Dean has done a brilliant job as DNC Chair. I would like him to stay on to continue to increase the Democratic majority. Rumor has it he wants to be appointed to HHS. I support that, but if he moves on I think it's important to keep jerk ideologues like Ickes out of that position. Ickes wrote the rules excluding Michigan and Florida in the primaries and then turned on a dime decrying the very rules he wrote. I vote no on Ickes.

34. I doubt that Obama would let Ickes become DNC chair after the slime he pulled against him.
My worry is someone like Harold Ford, Jr. taking the reins and turning back to the McAuliffe strategy that cost us the House, Senate and Presidency for so many years. We'll just have to see what happens.

19. I wouldn't blame him for leaving
He did a great job in four years. Under his leadership we have expanded our base, gained between 06 and 08 over fifty house seats and 10-12 Senate seats, governorships and state leg offices. I think '10 is bound to be a setback for dems as usually the inparty loses seats in midterm elections. He should take his laurels and get a nice cabinet post.

20. I asked him this question when I spoke to him briefly in 2007
He said that when your party has the incumbent President the DNC Chair becomes a figurehead who takes orders from the White House Political Director and that's not a gig he's really interested in.

38. I have not seen that yet in his own words.
But I have read it a lot. I doubt he really wants 4 more years of the thankless DNC chair. It's just that in the audio he did say it would be up to Obama. Even though he has said in the past that he would not seek it, I just wanted to make clear what the audio from VPR said.

You are probably right.

60. he won't- at least not in the near future. Pat Leahy is certain to run for re-election
in 2010. He's 66 or 68 and in good health. Vermonter love Pat. He's Vermont's first and only dem Senator. He's been in since 1974, and he'll be elected as long as he wants to stay. Bernie is up in 2012, and no way will Dean run against him either.
