The Times They Are A-Changin'
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

6. my father actually "jammed" with joannie baez once
it was actually when she was a nobody just learning to play guitar. a little known fact is that her name was always pronounced "bayz" but for some reason the media started calling he "bah-yez" and she didn't correct it forcefully enough so it just stuck.

4. I did this one at a large event in Marin, Friday night.
A bunch of us locals put on an Acoustic American show (for free) at a local (unnamed to protect it from the ratfuck trolls, here) venue to celebrate Change.

You should've heard 300 people singing this in three-part harmony.

This song never grows tired.

8. That is the truth
This song never grows tired.

How cool that you put on an Acoustic American show for free!

Wish that there was something like that here in Podunk, Florida.

10. It was wonderful.
I had the idea after seeing the "American Tune" (P Simon) advert and Springsteen whaling the tar out of "This Land Is Your Land" (complete, all verses) at the Obama Rally.

After finding out the venue was available, I started calling around. Marin is full of really good performers, and we did four hours of American songs and poems. I did a few of mine, and I did "When the Ship Comes In", "American Tune", "This Land", "Neck Deep in the Big Muddy", and some more when I was too drunk to remember what I did. I do know I wrapped it up with "Times", though, because I saw a video of it yesterday.

There were some great players there.

12. God, I would love to see that video
Is there any way you could post it or send it to me. I would so love to see it. (I loved your art show, a year or so ago, btw)

I know that we are all getting older, but these songs define our generation and they are as relevent now as they were back in the day.

What year were you born? I'm 1955. We had so many defining moments that make us the political animals that we are.

13. If I run into the people who had it, I will let you know.
I was at an event at Roche Winery, and these two women came up to me and asked me if I was me. Then they showed me the video on their camera, which they had taken the night before. I am pretty sure I gave them my card, but I was still a tad fuzzy, as it was just after noon.

1950

And, to me, the Music still really matters. But I primarily do bottleneck blues, nowadays.

Oh, yeah, I also did "America, the Beautiful", which was inspired by this (from a post on DU).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BKsUrcC1nU

I play it in the same style but my voice is a bit different (lower and fuller, and not nearly as much fun).

Wish you could have been there, Jeanette.

Tom
