"Context" based advertising on DU is often way off the mark... |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-09-08 07:17 PM by ddeclue
This kind of advertising looks at the rest of the words on the page and throws up something related but often times it is totally opposite of what a DU'er would think or totally tangential.
For instance.. on the post about Palin causing threats against Obama to go up and Obama "palling around with terrorists", it spammed me with "Learn Arabic". :grr::argh:
I've seen posts on the Iraq War come up with "Join the Army"
WTF??
If contextual advertising can't manage to get any more sophisticated than this, it actually hurts the ad clients to use it.

1. The "context" is determined by a computer... |
|
...not by a thinking brain. Are you expecting computers to think like people???? They aren't that "sophisticated" yet. Don't complain about something that can be so easily ignored. Me...I fine it amusing.

7. Then get a job with google. |
|
The fact is the google ad network is massive and covers an unbelievable number of topics. Of course the algorithms are going to make mistakes.

3. I've seen some funny ones. I think an ad for Spongebob came up once... |
|
...can't remember why though.
