I'm sure that I am just one of millions having to put up with the same thing. I live in a very conservative suburb of Buffalo, NY that voted heavily for McCain. A good deal of my conservative "friends" stopped talking to me months ago with the knowledge that I was campaigning for Barack. However now that the election has been won I have been bombarded with nasty racist emails and text messages from these "friends", not even considering the people that I have to see everyday as neighbors and co-workers that feel the need to add on to the pile.
incredibly dumb things I have been told in the last week(excluding incredibly nasty racist jokes that no one else needs to here)
-Barack is raising his own private "citizens army" that will rival the actual military in size and strength. -Barack will tax all fire arms and ammunition sales by 500% so kill off all gun ownership. -Barack will try to reverse the 25th ammendment so that he can serve for decades as president.
Anyway I so want to be a gracious winner, but it is getting harder by the day when I am constantly being confronted by jerks. Any Advice on how to deal with these things?

5. You have to let them know if any "friendship" is going to remain, |
|
they need to stop the racist bullshit and give our President a chance to lead. If that doesn't work ask them "why do you hate America?".

6. Tell them if they have a problem with President Obama, they should move to another |
|
country. Furthermore, if they keep up with their treasonous smears about the President Elect of the United States, that you will forward their info to the CIA, and they might end up in GITMO or with tapped phone lines.
In other words, they are not worth educating. If they don't get it by now, they never will. So just have fun :)

12. To put things in perspective |
|
in 2004 I campaigned for Edwards in the primary and then obviously Kerry in the General Election. After it was over a lot of these people were fairly gracious winners, always talking about how Kerry was a great candidate and such. Its just shocking to see them act like such jackasses after losing. I'm too young to remember how Bill Clinton was treated after he won in 1992 but I have heard the stories. It sounds like the same thing all over again.

19. The RW was horrible to Bill Clinton |
|
And it started on the very first day. The very first press conference, he made the mistake of calling on Brit Hume for the first question. After Brit spewed out some horrid question, Clinton snapped at him and said something about "I guess I'm not going to get any sort of honeymoon<" or words to that effect. And it was on. And for eight long years, they never let up. And the worst of it is, they just made shit up. Read "Blinded By The Right" by David Brock (now head of Media Matters) to get the whole story.

Do remember that many on this site posted about the concentration camps being built by Haliburton for the liberals when Bush declared martial law. Same category of BS.

9. Same crap we heard with Clinton. |
|
Not the racist stuff, of course, but I saw printed pamphlets explaining how Clinton was going to invite the Belgian Army into the US, and they would use writings on the backs of stopsigns for directions on how to take over the nation. They were even stockpiling Russian tanks in Saucier, MS, about two miles from where I grew up.
It was laughable, until April 19, 1995, when Timothy McVeigh blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City, because he believed all that crap. McVeigh even went to Saucier and climbed the fence where the tanks were kept to check it out. What he found is what any local could have told him--the tanks in question were old relics, completely inoperable. But he believed enough of the rest of it to slaughter 168 innocent people.
I'm expecting the same reaction to Obama, although I'm hoping to hell our law enforcement system will stop it this time. :(

14. In Chicago the racists went nuts when Harold Washington won as mayor. By his second term |

he won many of them over. Now people are going ABSOLUTELY nuts in the opposite direction with love for Obama. I really haven't heard much about hate here. So give them time. They might grow once they get to know Obama and see positive results.

after they get their tax cut and they still have their guns, they will come around. We want them to vote for him in 2012.
i would just say...hmmm, I hadn't heard that. I'll check on that. Where did you hear that? They will tell you and you can just say...hmm. but say it sort of dry, but not too sarcastic....but just a little.
BUT if you are never going to see them again... say: hey, isn't it great that Bush increased the power of the executive branch? Those liberal signing statements should be fun! }(

23. Yeah, I'd stick with the "Geeze, are you serious?" tone |
|
let them know that they are being rash and sort of crazy. There's no basis in reality that you know of for these beliefs, and if they can't point to any, then why do they believe this? You can let them know that you are disappointed in them, as you expected them to be more informed and have their opinions based in reality. There are too many places for them to get real information; there's no excuse for this kind of break with reality other than a willing decision to rely on emotion rather than reason.
stay distantly, mildly pleasant and ask them, "Hey, are you OK? I mean, the things you are saying just don't make sense. If you ever need to talk, call me, but only if you're ready to be reasonable. Take care."
BTW, I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

about race. Anyone who continues after that is not your friend. Maybe never was. So, cut them off. If you can't cut them off because they are co-workers, say, "I've asked you to refrain from making these comments to me beause they are upsetting to me. Since you seem eager to upset me, let's just stick to business, shall we?"

32. Go to fightthesmears.com. Google for "Joel's Army" and Sarah Palin... |
|
... then hit them with that garbage. So much of what they say is projection. All of these accusations are about the far-right, not the left.
If you ever feel the need to refute any particular point, you can go to fightthesmears.com, which has information on the most common emails that spread lies about Obama. Snopes.com is also a good source for debunking stuff.
I'm sorry you don't have a good core group of friends to rejoice with just now. That's got to be tough.
