Presidential Press Conferences - How Frequently Should Obama Schedule Them? Format? |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 05:15 PM by Median Democrat
Jimmy Carter attempted to conduct roughly one press conference every two weeks, and conducted about 70 press conference during his first term. On the other end of the spectrum, George W. Bush conducted only 13 press conferences during his first term in office, which is about 1 press conference every four months.
So, what should Obama aim for? Also, should he explore other formats besides simply giving a speech or answering questions in the press room? More one on one interviews? Speeches from the oval office delivered via Youtube to a subscriber list? A mixture of all of the above?

1. I think Obama will use his "bully pulpit" in all its forms |
|
Including pressers, the Saturday radio address, but also speeches/interviews via the Internet.

2. I remember he said he would open up meetings about healthcare to the public. |

He would broadcast them - so the American public knew what was going on. I like that idea a lot. I also like the idea of an interactive website and hope we continue to get email and text messages after signing up.
Press conferences every now and then are fine; direct access will be more effective.

5. He should to it like they do in England |

Prime Minister's Questions is one of the most brutal, grueling political tests I have ever seen. If our President was participating in something like that on a weekly basis our Democracy would be much, much healthier. http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp?Cat=Series&Code=PMQ&ShowVidNum=6&Rot_Cat_CD=PMQ&Rot_HT=&Rot_WD=&ShowVidDays=30&ShowVidDesc=Rp

Heck, you even have members of parliament loudly jeering or cheering at a particularly clever comeback.

10. You Know, I Would Want 1 Traditional PC Every 2 Months and ... |
|
One speech, chat or youtube video during the off month. In other words, the chat would be like a moderated townhall. Also, the youtube video could be e-mail directly to subscribers.
The traditional press conference every 2 months would beat Dubya's pace, and the alternative formats would borrow from the success of Obama's campaign use of the internet.

9. FWIW: All on the donor list will be sent links of the President |
|
conducting "Fireside Chats" directly to the donor base with you tube firepower and technology. That will expand exponentially by springtime but, the email addresses in the donor base will be the start. These folks "got serious game".
