Obama Wants Lieberman To Remain In Democratic Caucus
Obama Wants Lieberman To Remain In Democratic Caucus

Via Hufingtonpost

President-elect Barack Obama has informed party officials that he wants Joe Lieberman to continue caucusing with the Democrats in the 111th Congress, Senate aides tell the Huffington Post.

Obama's decision could tie the hands of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has been negotiating to remove Lieberman as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform committee while keeping him within the caucus. Lieberman has insisted that he will split from the Democrats if his homeland security position is stripped.

Aides to the president-elect did not return requests for comment. Senate officials were unclear whether Obama would be comfortable with Lieberman maintaining his current committee post.

1. My only concern is that Lieberman will use his committee chairmanship
to go after Obama the way the repukes went after Clinton.

5. If Obama wants Lieberman to keep his committe chair, then Obama deserves the knives
Lieberman will stab in his back.

I don't have a problem with Lieberman remaining in the caucus, but he should not chair ANY committees.

7. Yes. I agree! I don't mean to be ill-willed, but maybe he'll develop some unusual disease.....

something that will cause him to retire and stay at home, painting by numbers.

3. I need to know...
Is Lieberman representing his constituents? It sounds like he only cares about himself. Time to rid Warshington of more rubbish. Power to the people.

10. Wow.
Seeing as we're not getting to 60 in the Senate, flush this turd. The votes in CT need to do likewise in 2010.

6. Remaining in the caucus doesn't mean a chairmanship.
Lieberman has no leverage to threaten bolting unless he keeps Homeland Security.

8. Obama wants all the Democrats he can get.
Obviously he's not as interested in punishing LIEberman as we are. Plus... it would look pretty partisan (to say the least).

I want to see Holy Joe pay... but as usual... Obama makes the smart call.

11. We all know of Lieberman's intentions.
He campaigned for the REPUBLICAN nominee. He should be stripped of his committee assignments and thrown out of the party. Hell, he ain't even an independent, EGOJOE made his own party just so he could get reelected.

12. Oh Crap. Well I sorta expected this (the 'sign's were heading for something like this).
It looks like the FISA bill decision all over again (i.e. Obama voted for it despite everyone wanted him to go against it). Still, this is not going to go well with much of the democratic base-no matter how much they spin it. If this is what to expect from the guy-and the party future-wise then I see a further splintering of a future demoralized (and let down) democratic party and a dark 2010 mid-term election-wise.

But then again it's still early. And I could (hope) be wrong.

13. Lieberman will play both sides; he will pass information on developing legislation
to the republicans, in effect their built in spy.

16. The goal is to get as close to 60 as possible to make it easier
to get his agenda passed. So Lieberman will be pivotal.

17. Strip him of his committe positions
give him a new office in the basement and then let him go wherever his shriveled up little heart desires.

The DNC should begin right now to strategize to defeat him in 4 years.

Until then he can wander the halls of the Senate.

I want him in the caucus if possible but with no chairmanship.

21. There was some talk about Lieberman's votes last week. It was said that except for votes relating
to the Iraq war and war on terrorism in general, Lieberman has voted with the Democrats nearly all the time.

Think about it this way.

If it is perceived that Obama "saved" Lieberman, you think that Lieberman would pretty much end up "owing" Obama his political life, and thus vote however Obama told him?
