My daughter's teacher sent this home with my 8-year old... |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 05:38 PM by TwoSparkles
Every week, my third grader's teacher sends home a cute newsletter. It's laid out like a newspaper and it outlines what the class studied and accomplished during the previous week.
This week, there is a paragraph titled "Unit Study." The kids learned about elections, past presidents and the Presidential election.
There is a blurb under "Unit Studies"--and I thought I would share it with all of you.
"Congratulations to Barack Obama for being nominated as our 44th President of the United States. Please remind your child that we now have to support our President elected into office and not complain about not winning. We are all part of the United States, and Obama will be President for all of us. Next we will begin our unit on space and the solar system."
I thought that was pretty darn cool. :)

3. Except he wasn't "nominated" he was"elected". Odd mistake for a teacher. |
|
But the sentiment is nice.

and she just forgot to change the language.

11. My daughter did tell me that they day... |

...after the election, that there was a little boy who was crying and saying that he was very angry that Obama won.
My daughter said the teacher told him that "Obama is our President now and we need to respect him as our President."
My daughter said the kid whipped out a notebook and said, "Well, I'll just write secret bad things about Obama then!"
Just a note--this "child" is the class bully. My child has a daily story about him. He's constantly bullying other kids, verbally abusing everyone--including the teacher and disrupting the entire class. Unfortunately, my child's elementary school doesn't deal well with bullies. They ignore them.
...but that's another story.

...and a similar note about him had appeared under "Unit Studies," would you have thought it was "pretty darn cool," or would you have been screaming about "suppression of dissent" and "indoctrination?"

It is America, after all. Let them complain.

12. Well as a kid who was beaten up |
|
by GOP hooligan 8 year olds drunk on the murder of Bobby Kennedy, or rather pumped up off their right wing parents joy at his murder, I'd just like to say that some kids 'complain' with fists and boot kicks. After all, it's America.

but the "support" isn't. The teacher should've left that out. Keep politics out of it.

Cross out Obama and put Bush there, and you'll see the problem.

15. No. If McCain had won, would we want teachers sending home such notes? |
|
She's attempting to quell the quite normal dialog that takes place as children repeat what they hear at home. That's part of life, and we benefit from dialog among various points of view.
I give the teacher a big "F" on this one.

17. That bothers me. "...we have to support our President...and not complain"? I thought |
|
we were finally free of Republicans telling us that we had to support the President at all times, without exception. The principle doesn't change just because you're now in charge. When I have kids, I'm going to teach them that you must ALWAYS question the President, or anyone in authority, and support him only if he deserves it. I'll tell them what Teddy Roosevelt said on the subject:
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

20. This is just as much an abuse of position as it would be if McCain had won. |
|
Teachers should not be using their positions for party politics.
The only way we can prevent Republican teachers from propagandising to children is by not supporting Democrats who do it.

My 5th grade grandson just finished a workbook before the election about both candidates. He called me about information for Obama.
Last night we were talking about how he did on it, then we were talking about the election. He knew that Alaska and Hawaii had 3 EVs, knew that NC was Obama's and asked if MO had been declared. He's 10YO and I was so impressed about how much he learned about our elections.
