14. And on a site note..... |
|
.... my MA is in historic preservation and I'm a bit of an old house junkie. The White House is no exception. I've been addicted to the website whitehousemuseum.org for the last few months, reading about the history of the building and enjoying the photographs.
Since the election, traffic is so heavy the site is hardly navigable. Today it's even worse.
Americans are excited about their first family again. Makes ya smile.

I have a book called An Invitation To The White House : At Home With History by Hillary Clinton, and there are several pictures of this room which was one of Hillary's favorites. The book is loaded with pictures of many rooms of the White House and depicts state dinners including the preparations, menus, etc.

They're all interchangeable. That's the beauty of Laura's approach to decorating - one day it's the slipcover, the next it's the dress for the state dinner! No waste.

49. There's just no color sense in it all. Brocades and tapestries and mottled crap. |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 06:25 PM by TahitiNut
There's just so damned much on can do with judicious use of texture and colors ... without making it look washed out and mottled and yechh.
I personally like anchor pieces in neutrals with accents in colors that evoke moods. But with the kind of budget and access that goes into the White House there's SOOO much that can be done without making it look like some old age home's waiting room from the 50s.
I mean... the sofa Michelle is sitting on is sorta OK ... the arms are too low for my taste ... but there's no character in the accent pillow.
I'd put Cape Cod overstuffed furniture in there ... neutral tones of cotton canvas and wide-wale corduroy ... with accents of muted but definite hued colors. And flowers and plants ... fake is OK, if really good ones.

51. I agree that the rooms look very 1950s. Very dull, very "safe." No taste whatsoever. |
|
Those rooms do look like the lobby of a rest home. You're right!
I think the absolute worst piece is the coffee table in the middle of the Oval Office. Just dreadful.

55. The coffee table, the lamp shade, the lamp ... yech. |
|
I mean there *IS* a way to do "fifties" with a LOT more taste and panache. But they've gone "institutional fifties" which wasn't even the fifties but more like traditional "thirties" with better lighting. I sure don't advocate glass and brass in the White House architecture, but I'd sure advocate a carefully balanced ECLECTIC decor. The notion that everything looks like "tea room" for little old ladies is just so dreary.
Hell ... I'm just an old fart and I'm sure I could do better.

13. Ok, I got to call out that Bush did one classy thing |
|
He sat in the same arm chair as President-elect Obama did, and not behind the desk.
In "meeting language" it was a meeting of equals.
I mention it because had Bush seated himself behind the President's desk and had Obama sit on one of the two sofas directly in front of him, it would have been very classless and I would have remarked on that as well.
One classy thing (and minor) does not make up for 8 years of horrible decisions and smugness. But it's worth noting.

So I assume it will be packed up to go with 43. Maybe it stays till Obama gets a new one.

Not surprisingly, chimpass' body language left a lot to be desired, especially when it was just he and Obama walking around. Obama looked relaxed and talkative, chimp looked stiff and looked like he really wanted to be anywhere else but there and he sure as hell didn't wanna be talking. Stupid chimpass...fuck him. Let him move out now if he's gonna be so pissy and look inconvenienced.
