If you ever doubted that conservatives are on crack, exhibit A:

The Importance of Being Earnest

11.10.08 -- 10:25PM By Josh Marshall

John Hinderacker, arguably the most influential conservative blogger in the country ...

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.
At the feet of masters.

150. Rightwing philosophy=Just say it or Tell a lie Often enough
This is learned behavior from the rightwing talkers. The truth is irrelevant, the truth is what we say it is. As a Bush administration official said, we are creating our own realities. There was weapons of mass destruction because we say there was. Bush is a great speaker who never makes errors because we say he is.

126. Nope... here is his contact info:
Mr. Hinderaker lives with his family in Apple Valley, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School. He is listed in The Best Lawyers In America and was recognized as Minnesota's Super Lawyer of the Year for 2005. John can be reached by phone at (612)245-8043.

This proves my theory that total morons can graduate from college and go on to law school.

57. HOW FEW gaffes and verbal blunders?!?!?

Let's examine some of these carefully constructed sentences of Bush's, shall we?

"More and more of our imports come from overseas."

"Keep good relations with the Grecians."

"Make the pie higher." Whatever that means....

"Make no mistake about it, I understand how tough it is, to talk to families who die."

"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."

"I think if you say you're going to do something and don't do it, that's trustworthiness."

"I'm not going to accept a lousy bill out of the United Nations Senate."

"I think--tide turning--see, as I remember--I was raised in the desert, but tides kind of--it's easy to see a tide turn. Did I say those words?"

That asshole has made more verbal blunders than Dan Quayle. FUCKING DAN QUAYLE! :banghead:

Conservatards will literally say ANYTHING, no matter how untruthful or idiotic, to sell their asinine propaganda.

60. He lost me at "obama is a good talker"
"a good talker?"

I can't place my finger on it, but that sounds stupid for some reason. It's not really grammatically incorrect that I can see, but I don't see a lot of "discipline" in the way he speaks. Maybe Hinderacker could polish his rhetoric a bit before he complains about the degree of "goodness" that someone else's speech has.

143. A good speaker
The more proper expression would have been "speaker" not "talker". A talker is someone who talks, but talking is in essence the act of saying words. A speaker on the other hand really is someone who speaks in the sense of making a speech. It would tend to refer more to the act of communicating. Children are "good talkers" when they are young and vocalize a lot. Adults either "speak well" which tends to refer more to just diction or clarity, or a good "speakers" which means they tend to communicate verbally very well.

The sad part is that I know what the man was attempting to say. Bush was careful, and it caused him to speak the way he did. That halting, stumbling, convoluted sentence structure for which he was infamous was a result of this caution. However, it was a caution born of ignorance. It was because he was unprepared to speak on topics that he attempted to "sound smart" without actually saying anything. The result is exactly what you hear. He starts sentences without knowing "where he's going" so then he tries to complete them and he gets caught it grammatical or logical dead ends. He's so worried about "sounding smart" that he won't do what most of us do in that situation, merely stop and start over again.

Obama, to some degree suffered this in his early democratic debates. Too many "um's" and other stammering which were really time wasters while he tried to think through the topic. As president, he won't have to deal with this much. He is only speaking when he is "prepared", and he has a large command of a number of subjects so he is prepared most of the time. The only thing that I suspect Obama will have to learn to do is to use expressions like "it wouldn't be appropriate for me to discuss this at the time". That is how you avoid angering people with whom you are still attempting to come to agreement. And yes, it can also be a way to avoid discussing topics for which you feel unprepared.

THE GOLDEN WINGNUT AWARD....

The Wingnut Contest is over and the votes have now been tallied by the prestigious accounting firm of Pollhost.com. So without further ado, the five winners of the Golden Wingnut Award are:

  1. John Hinderaker: "It must be very strange to be President Bush. A man of extraordinary vision and brilliance approaching to genius...."

  2. Glenn Reynolds: "Maybe we should rise above the temptation to point out that claims of a 'quagmire' were wrong....Nah."

  3. Michelle Malkin: "The Defeatocrats Cheer"

  4. Ann Althouse: "Let's take a closer look at those breasts."

  5. Kim du Toit: "The Pussification of the Western Male"
Congratulations, wingnuts! And special congratulations to Power Line's John Hinderaker, who ran away with first place by a wide margin — and deservedly so. Also to Kim du Toit, who mounted a last second comeback against veteran wingers Jonah Goldberg and John Derbyshire to nab the final spot. It would be cool if I had a trophy or something to send to each one of the winners, but I'm afraid I don't. My little clipart creation will have to do instead. And since we're all about democracy and the graphical representation of data here at PA, the full results are below the fold in handy bar chart format. The complete list of 14 nominees is here.

102. I don't get it.
The author is correct. Obama really needs to watch his style and choice of words lest he be ridiculed for showing a lack of intellect. George W Bush has been highly eloquent and should be much admired for his oratory skills.

Indeed, Obama has a lot that he can learn from this great man, our president, George W Bush.

Everyone here should be ashamed of their lack of respect for our current president for it is he who has great dignity, intellect, charisma, and eloquence. I guess people are jealous haters sometimes.

108. That guy is doing us a big favor.
Seriously, a direct comparison between Bush and Obama is what got our guy elected in the first place. The ability to speak clearly--in Obama's case often on very complex subjects--is some of the best evidence we have that he is actually thinking about such subjects, instead of desperately fishing for the appropriate lie or evasion which will put the question to bed for the rest of the press conference, which is what Bush did with questionable skill for eight years.

Clear speech suggests clear thinking, a virtue previously prized amongst Chief Executives. If Obama can translate that clear thought into decisive action, too, then we have a chance to rebuild from the disgraceful shambles our nation has become thanks to the language-mangling incompetence of George Bush.

Am I supposed to believe that bush did that on purpose-that his intention was to somehow raise public awareness by repeatedly misspeaking the word nuclear? So what was President bush's intentions for the words 'compassionate' and 'uniter'? I may be going out on a limb here but I think John Hinderacker may be on the cutting edge of modern moranity! Great find ProSense, thanks for this! Bookmarked for further entertainment.
