Checking in at 17% of the US population, German-Americans are the largest ethnic group in America. Sadly, it looks like Obama is going to snub this important and often-overlooked minority group. The millions of German-Americans who voted for Obama are going to be very angry at this stab in the back. Seriously, are we supposed to believe that there is not one qualified German-American in this country? That German-Americans are just a bunch of fat, lazy, sausage-eating beer swillers? Come on, this is the 21st century, and I think we are all enlightened enough to understand that Obama needs to show that he's a friend of the German-American community.

Americans of British and more specifically English descent are probably the largest ethnic group in America, but most of them don't have any ethnic identification and would think of themselves as 'American'.

21. Come off it. You know that the White House has never been under-represented

by people of German extraction. Quite the contrary, if anything. I'll bet the same goes for Congress and the Senate. Is it really a "pork" issue for you? I can't believe it? Surely, you believe that Obama will go for whoever he considers is the best for the particualr position; racial origin will not be a factor.

Do you know for a fact that the mothers of the people he has chosen so far are not of Germanic extraction? They certainly seem to have been extraordinarly over-represented under Bush. Also Nixon. I don't know about Reagan. Jewish people often seem to be over-represented in positions of power, but that's because they're a very brainy people.

Over-represented though high-ranking German officials were in Nixon's regime, I think it's arguable that they too cold well have been the best, or among the best for his purposes. Erlichman is actually a very personable type, now, at least, and fascinating to listen to. A very dry sense of humour. "Nixon was very intense. You wouldn't catch him making sand-castles" was a gem of his that had me in stitches. Words to that effect.

Patience. He hasn't picked all his people yet. And maybe the complexion of his staff will change a little over time. Good government, after all, is better than racial quotas based on proportion of the national population. Germany's leaders seem to have been first-class since WWII, certainly compared to ours in the UK, though that's hardly saying much. But it doesn't mean that the suitability of German Americans or of any other racial strain, at a particular time, will always reflect their proportion of the population.
