Please share your comments with Cynthia Dunbar of the Texas SBOE, District 10
If you missed the story about Ms. Dunbar, read this thread by texastoast:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7854758

I think we should all let Ms. Dunbar and the Board know what we think about this. Here's what I sent:

Ms. Dunbar:

As the saying goes, you're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts. What you wrote is not opinion, but essentially an accusation of treason against Mr. Obama.

As a public official, specifically one involved with education, you have a responsibility to conduct yourself with dignity and in the public interest. Your ludicrous, intemperate, baseless remarks do neither.

Growing up in the Deep South, I witnessed all sorts of intolerance, hysteria and divisiveness, much of it cloaked with the same sort of Taliban-level false piety you use to justify your profoundly regressive and extremist views. Most Americans have evolved - if you'll pardon the term - past such primitivism. If you have not, or cannot, you do not belong in public life, and most certainly should have no influence on education policy.

Your own education, if you have the ability to read for comprehension, might begin with a careful study of the President Elect's book "The Audacity of Hope" in which he elegantly lays out his deep love of the country and his practical ideas for strengthening it and moving it forward into a brighter future.

As you seem to lack a sense of shame, it's doubtful that your resignation from the Board will be forthcoming, but at a minimum, you owe the TEA, the citizens of Texas and our new President an apology.

Sincerely...

4. Here's my email and their response:

Dear Members of the Board:
I was horrified at the statements made by Cynthia Dunbar about President-Elect Barack Obama. I can only hope that the majority of you were also shocked and embarrassed by her lunacy.

I grew up in Harlingen and have always been proud of my Texas roots. That is one reason I am so dismayed by Cynthia Dunbar’s words. I would like to tell other people that she is not representative of Texans or Texas; however, I don’t really know that with certainty. Perhaps the state has changed that much since I moved away. Perhaps every member of the State Board of Education believes that President-Elect Obama is a man who would conspire with terrorists to attack the United States. I (and many other people outside Texas) only know the name and beliefs of one board member and that is Cynthia Dunbar. She now represents the type of education Texas school children receive.

It is not just the reputation of Texas and Texans that is at stake here. My husband and I have plans to view property there in December but we are reconsidering that decision now because of questions we cannot answer. If President-Elect Obama is considered to be a traitor and terrorist, then what are his supporters considered to be? Are we traitors and terrorists, too? If so, how will we be treated in Texas? Will we suffer violence at the hands of the likes of Cynthia Dunbar? Are Texas children being taught the views of Cynthia Dunbar? What other backward ideas are being taught to the children of Texas?

Until the Board denounces Mrs. Dunbar’s statements I can only assume that the answers would be as horrifying as her statements were to begin with. Like it or not, she is the face of Texas now.
Sincerely,

Jennifer Z.

Their response:

State Board of Education members are elected public officials. Mrs. Dunbar is in the middle of a four-year term. I will make sure your comments are forwarded to her as well as other members of the board.
