http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/12/AR2008111201654.htmlHere's some good news for people who hope to catch the inaugural parade. The public will get more sidewalk space on Pennsylvania Avenue than in recent inaugurals -- but not because of the record crowds expected for Barack Obama's Jan. 20 celebration.
The space is opening up because of a lawsuit filed four years ago by war protesters who said they were unfairly swept aside during President Bush's parade. In 2005, there were so many bleachers set up -- for people who bought tickets -- that space was extremely tight for those who wanted to stand curbside and watch for free.
This time, there will be 8,700 reserved bleacher seats, compared with 20,000 in 2005, officials said.
National Park Service spokesman Dave Barna said today that a new regulation, being made public later this week, also will open up any unused bleacher seats to the public 10 minutes before the parade kicks off, at no charge.
